Obituary

Bill bid Lummi Island farewell on Dec. 19th, proud to have been the oldest resident on the island. He also took pride in being the oldest veteran at the Beach School Veteran’s Day Assembly, having served in the Navy during WWII where he saw conflict in the Atlantic and Pacific.
Growing up in North Carolina, he witnessed a racism that fueled his political beliefs based on equality for all. Well-read in history, current affairs, religion, and the arts, he was an engaging conversationalist on any topic and freely expressed great disapproval for the injustices committed nationally and internationally.
Bill’s love for animals spoiled many a dog or cat fortunate to call him “dad”. Shortly after he turned 90, Bill’s walks on the uneven trails through nearby woods were not as safe and he took to walking 1-2 miles per day on his dirt road. His walking sticks supported him on his last walk two days before his death. Bill left a community that embraced him, and friends and family that loved him.
He is survived by his son, Michael (Joan) Moye; step son, Ed Casebeer; grandson, Jake Moye; granddaughter, Rebecca (Mike) Burrous; step grandson, John Casebeer; and great granddaughters, Malia and Dannica Burrous. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Elaine and daughter Nancy.
A gathering in Bill’s honor will he held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Lummi Island Fire Dept., Lummi Island Heritage Trust, or Friends of the Lummi Island Library.

  1. Michael and family, I’m sorry for your loss. He must have been quite a man! You’ll have a lot of great memories of your Dad for sure.

  2. I am deeply humbled to have known Bill. The friendship he shared, the hugs he gave, the conversations we had will be deeply missed. His passing has left a hole in my heart but know his gentle spirit is looking out for us all.
