Obituary
Thomas John Hughes, age 89, died on November 26, 2022 at his home in Lynden, Washington, with his loving wife, Cecilia T. Hughes, at his side. Tom was raised in Hopkinton, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Hopkinton High School Class of 1951.
Following graduation, Tom joined the U.S. Army and served his country honorably in Korea, earning two purple hearts during the Battle of Outpost Harry, one of the major battles of the U.S. Korean Conflict. After the Korean War, Tom joined the U.S. Air Force and was posted on the DEW line, a system of radar stations used during the Cold War in the Northern Arctic Region of Canada along the North coast and the Aleutian Islands. This is where he came to know and love the Pacific Northwest. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Tom settled in Northwest Washington where he and his late wife Joy ran the Eastview Blueberry Farm in Ferndale, Washington for many years.
An avid sportsman, Tom loved being outside and being on the water, especially crab fishing. He was an all-around family man and loved having his grandchildren around. He was a talented photographer and in his retirement enjoyed the view of Mt. Baker he woke up to every day. Tom was brilliant beyond measure and had an innate ability to hold a conversation with anyone.
In addition to his wife Joy, Tom was predeceased by his mother Anna J. and father Francis M. Hughes, his brother Alfred Hughes, and great-grandson Truman Anderson. He leaves behind a large and loving family including his siblings, Barbara Ovalle (Arthur), Martha L. Hughes Main, Barnett Hughes, David M. Hughes (Theresa), Lydia Sheahan (Paul), Michael Hughes, Frances Cote (Alfred), and Paula Orakwulu (Kessy). He also leaves his children, Jack Hughes, Jeri-Ann Bungard, David H. Hughes, Wilson Tollum, Debra Tollum Cicchetti, and many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Tom believed that you have the freedom to be yourself here and now and that nothing can stand in your way.
Tom’s altar was Mount Baker—-her majestic perfection illuminating his very essence of a higher plane of existence.
Well done good and faithful brother!

April 14, 2023- Well said, sister Martha. Today would have been Tom’s 90th birthday. May he rest in peace! I might add that Tom was always reliable and did not disappoint. I think that you and all members of his loving families would agree. Happy spring 2023 to all who read this.

“A soulmate is someone who you carry with you forever. It’s the one person who knew you and believed in you before anyone else did or when no one else would.”
Always and forever.

Hi Cecile. So very sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences to you as you go thru the process of bereavement.
I can remember when I was a teenager walking by your house on Hayden Rowe listening to you play the piano so well. Nice memories.
Take good care, Cecile. Life WILL get better for you. May God comfort you at this difficult time!
