Nicholas DeMaio

Nicholas DeMaio, age 91, of Bellingham, passed away on July 15, 2012. His courageous battle with kidney failure ended peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 20, 1920, in Jamestown, NY. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II as an airplane and engine mechanic. He married the love of his life, Fern Thorp, on December 24, 1949. They retired in Bellingham in 1990.
In addition to being a loving husband and father, Nicholas worked with the US Postal Service as a mail carrier for 23 years. He enjoyed traveling, the sports of baseball and golf, and playing a good game of bridge. One of his pleasures was preparing and sharing is famous Papa Nicks spaghetti sauce for his friends at the Village at Cordata.
Nicholas was preceded in death by his parents; 11 siblings; and his precious wife of 61 years. He will be greatly missed by his daughters and sons-in-law, Nicki and Booth Fowler and Toni and Dennis Whitmyre; grandchildren, Matthew Sweet and wife Sharon, Christopher Sweet and wife Wendy, Whitney Auld and husband Steven , Garrett and Harrison Whitmyre; and great grandchildren, Kayla, Nicholas, Casey and Cody Sweet.
Nicki and Toni would like to especially thank Dr. Lotfi and the staff at Mt. Baker Kidney Center for their compassionate care of their father.
