Obituary

Lynden, WA

On Saturday March 8, 2014, as his loving family surrounded him, Ken stepped into the outstretched arms of his Lord and Savior. For a year, ALS/Lou Gehrigs disease took away his strength, but never his spirit nor faith.
Born 2/23/48 to Hilbert (Hip) and Henrietta (Toots) Kok, he grew up in Lynden, WA, graduating from Lynden Christian HS and the University of Washington with an Electrical Engineering degree.
In June 1970, he married Jan Menser and moved to Alameda, CA, where he worked for Bechtel Corp. in their San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil offices.
In 1977, they returned home to Lynden where Ken was employed with Anvil Corp. for a year before starting his own electrical engineering firm, K-Engineers. He is known by his colleagues, family and friends as a man of great work ethic, honesty and integrity. Always a smile, his hearty laugh and the reassurance in difficult situations It is what it is.
Ken served as a deacon and chairman of the building committee for Sonlight CRC.
Kens greatest loves: his wife, four children and their spouses, and eleven precious grandchildren; they brought his greatest joy. He loved golfing with his buddies as well as his children. Took many golf trips, won numerous tournaments but much to his disdain never achieved the elusive hole-in-one. Ken also loved fishing trips with his son, grandson and numerous friends, anything UW Husky (Go Dawgs!) and Mariners Spring Training.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Jan, children and grandchildren Amy (Rick) Meyer, Ashtyn and Kylan; Matthew (Joy) Kok, Abby, Sam and Libby; Sara (Jake) Brady, Jacob, Matthew and Phoenix; Lisa (JT) Oates, Maddie, Adah and Keller. Mother Henrietta (Toots) Kok, siblings Janice (Larry) Vander Haak, Linda (Rolf) Haugen, Ron Kok, Lori (Brad) Elmenhurst. Sister-in-law Claudia (Alan) Brim. Also many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nephews, Nieces and numerous dear friends. You loved us well. Well miss you but never forget you!

  1. I met Ken 55 years ago in little league. We became friends then and I always thought of him as a friend. As life goes by the people from your past are of interest to you as to what they do in life. Ken had a goods life. I got to attend Ken and Jan’s wedding. Jan and I went to school together and we were good friends so I was happy the two of them met and fell in love, married and raised their family. I send my deepest sympathy to Jan and all the kids, I know you will miss Ken for a long time.

  2. I am sad to see that Ken is gone. I appreciate the time he took to help me with electrical questions, and the laughs we had. I hope to see him in heaven someday.

  3. I met Ken 15 years ago. Our firm grew with his through the years. He was a very talented engineer, had a great hearty laugh which I will miss so much. His talent and his passion for others will be greatly missed.

  4. George Hurst says:

It is a sad day for the electrical industry. Ken was always a friendly voice when some would choose to be negative. A man of integrity and honesty that will be missed.

  5. You’re in our hearts and prayers at this difficult time. He will be greatly missed as he always had time to visit or answer questions which I much appreciated.
