Obituary

Katherine Richards (Pomeroy) Meyers, age 92, long time resident of Camano Island, WA and Grafton, Ohio passed away peacefully on April 17, 2017 at Mt. Baker Care Center in Bellingham.

Wife of Thomas B. Meyers (from Lyman, WA), mother of Sue (Phil) Sharpe of Bellingham and Barbie (Dave) Tatman of Rockfield, Kentucky and grandmother of five beloved grandchildren, Katie (Adam) Kortlever and Claire Sharpe and John, Phil and Parke Tatman. She is survived by her loving nieces, Janet (Marshall) McBride and Diane (Marshall) Neste and nephews Jim Marshall, Buddy Meyers and Dan and Mike Cyr and numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Pomeroy and her sisters Patricia Pomeroy, Nan Warren and Barbara Marshall.

Kay was born in Portland, Oregon on October 6, 1924 to Merritt and Clara Richards Pomeroy and raised in Seattle where she attended Queen Anne High School and graduated from the University of Washington in 1946 and remained an active member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Kay and Tom married on June 28, 1946 recently celebrating their 70th anniversary. They lived in Hawaii in their early married life and returned to Seattle before moving to Ohio in 1956 where Tom worked for Moen Faucet Company (Elyria) for the next 28 years and Kay was active raising her family and involved in many community activities including Girl Scouts, the YWCA, PTA, and the local Methodist Church. Kay created a welcoming home and the house was full with Sue and Barbie’s school friends and at least one active bridge group. Homemade cookies were always on hand and there was an open invitation to all for dinner. Kay always had room for one more at her table.

In 1984, they retired to Camano Island, WA where the family spent many summers at Kay’s mother, Clara Pomeroy’s, beach cabin. Camano was a shared and defining experience for Kay, her sisters Barbara and Nan and Clara’s six grandchildren. Kay and Tom were active in Camano activities and developed a great community of friends that centered around Camano Country Club. Kay was always organizing a bridge game or planning a gathering for family and friends whether it was for holidays, attending the ballet or watching her favorite sports teams. Kay was known and loved or making fun things happen.

From childhood on Kay lived a full and active life. She had a passion for sports and the outdoors including snow skiing in her youth and golf and anything involving water in her later years. She let her daughters know that things would be better if they were outside. She was an avid sports fan, fiercely loyal to her Huskies and Mariners. Kay was adventuresome, taking any opportunity to travel whether to Hawaii for family vacations, or around the world. Kay’s greatest gift to all was her love of life and her advice to her daughters and grandchildren that they should always pursue their dreams.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at Stanwood First United Methodist, 27128 102nd Dr. NW, Stanwood, WA with a reception to follow.
