Obituary

Helen L. Almojera (Crandall) unexpectedly passed away in her sleep June 16, 2021. Helen was born July 23, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska. She is preceded in death by her beloved big brother, Perry D. Crandall, and her parents Margaret T. and Perry C. Crandall. She is survived by her son Kenneth J. Glunt and her husband Herman G. Almojera. She leaves behind her sister, Linda C. Pletcher (Crandall), brother Daniel T. Crandall, nephew Aaron S. Crandall, and nieces Meredeth B. McEntire (Crandall) and Ann C. Helgeson (Pletcher).

Helen attended elementary school in Pullman and Vancouver, WA, then graduated from Hudson’s Bay HS in Vancouver. Afterwards, she attended the University of Puget Sound, then transferred to Seattle University where she received her BS, specializing in medical transcription. With this degree she began her lifelong career as a medical transcriptionist, first in Sedro Woolley then in the Bellingham/Ferndale area. In her “retirement” she enjoyed working at the Deming Library as a Page, making many new friends. She recently completed her training to become a Certified Home Health Care Aide and was looking forward to helping others. She truly was a lifelong learner.

Over the years, in addition to raising Ken, she and Herman fostered four young boys, doing their best to help them through their tumultuous teenage years. Helen was always ready to lend a steady hand to anyone who needed it.

As the wife of a Nooksack tribal member, she developed a real appreciation for their culture, ceremonies, and tribal ways. She took special interest in the Indian School and their local impact, culminating in a display at the Lynden Historical Museum. She also worked as the tribal librarian for a time, helping children read and develop an appreciation for books.

As soon as she moved from Ferndale to Deming, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of owning a horse. Throughout the years horses came and went until she found Kitt. In later years, she discovered she was not riding enough so she bid a fond farewell to her beloved horse, finding a young rider who was thrilled to own Kitt. Along with her horse ownership, she became an active member of the Back Country Horsemen and served in various board positions throughout the years.

Helen will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. You could always count on her for her wise words, comfort, and understanding. She was a kind and gentle soul.

A Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held on her birthday, July 23^rd, 2021 at 1:00PM, 4753 Valley Highway 9, Deming, WA.
