Obituary

Gregory Charles Lutz, 52, of Lummi Island, Washington, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the University of Washington Medical Center. He died from congestive heart failure after a valiant fight for his life. We appreciate the many wonderful doctors and attendants who worked to save him.

Gregory was born in Manhattan, New York, on March 7, 1965 to Janet L. Lutz. In 1970, he was welcomed to Bellingham (his mother’s home town) by his grandparents, Chuck and Viola Lutz, and his Aunt Patricia Jorgenson. In 1995, he moved to Maui, Hawaii, living there for nineteen years, before moving back to Bellingham in 2014.

He attended Franklin and Happy Valley Grade Schools, Fairhaven Middle School, and graduated from Sehome High School in 1983. His senior year he participated in the State Basketball Championship Tournament at Seattle Center. He earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Washington in 1988. While attending the university, Greg pledged the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, where he made many lifelong friends.

Greg had a passion for family, friends, music, and the great outdoors. Always quick with a warm smile and embrace, Greg enjoyed nothing more than organizing a “gathering” as he called them, to bring together his friends, to enjoy the sounds of one of his favorite bands or performers. Greg always looked to bring new friends into his incredible circle, while maintaining relationships that spanned decades.

His self-taught computer skills helped “would be” entrepreneurs to build web sites. Greg took special joy in shooting pictures and video which he uploaded and shared from the events he attended, creating smiles and memories for all of us.

Greg is survived by his loving mother Janet Lutz-Smith and special friend Susan Sturtz. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A celebration of Greg’s life will be held Sunday, September 10th, at 2:00 p.m. at 628 Old Samish Rd. in Bellingham.

I graduated a few years ahead of Greg at Sehome, and was pleased when he joined our fraternity “back in the day”. The last time I saw him was at a “gathering” of his classmates at the Green Frog, where he and the gang were listening to one of my old bandmates. That was a couple of years ago. Greg was always friendly and cordial, a true gentleman. Sad to hear of his passing way too early. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Janet–I saw Greg’s obituary in the Seattle Times today (Sept. 7) and I was so shocked. After I saw his obit on the website, I confirmed that it was indeed your Greg. He was about the same age as our Brian when we lost him. Losing a spouse is one thing, but losing one of your offspring is certainly another. My heart goes out to you, Pat, and all of his close friends. When you have more time, and willing, I would like to hear from you. When I remarried, I moved into my new wife’s (Carolyn’s) quarters approximately a block away here at Emerald Heights. My new address is 10885 176th Circle NE, Redmond, WA 98052-7216; email is ben.carolyn@outlook.com, phone is 425.885.9179.Love, Ben

  3. So sad to hear of Greg’s passing. While I hadn’t spoken to him in many, many years, he’ll always have a special place in my heart as the first guy to break it. I also take credit for being the one to get him to finally change those glasses in the classic Greg picture posted. I hope he always remembered me for that :) I know he will be missed by many because the thing I remember the most was the dedication he had to his friends and family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you grieve.

Dear family, Please accept my condolences for your loss. What has helped my family through difficult times like these is the hope set out by Jehovah God at Revelation 21:4 that tells us about a time when mourning and death itself will be no more. Draw comfort from the hope of seeing him again.

    Sincerely,
    EJ

  5. I was so sad to read this today in the newspaper. It’s been a long time since my family and I have seen you all, but you are all still family to me. My thoughts go out to Janet and family.
