Obituary

Gordon Kurt Manthey was born on January 10th 1959 in Ferndale, WA to his father David Manthey and his mother Marlene Dunkin and his older brother Jim Manthey. In his youth he lived and went to school in Sunny Side and Spokane, WA until 1976 before moving back to Whatcom county where he continued his school years at Meridian High School. He was a hard worker all of his life, owning and operating Skagit Canopy Center in Mt. Vernon, construction work, farm work and a self employed salesman. He was truly a “Jack of all trades and a master of none.” One thing he truly did master was being a providing father to his two sons Shawn and David and his step daughter Sheila. Gordon was proud to be 23 1/2 years sober living life to its fullest potential. He enjoyed being outdoors horseback riding in the mountains, hunting, camping, fishing, raising rabbits, planting dahlias in his garden and collecting antiques. He had befriended many in our community offering a helping hand and a friendly smile. On the morning of June 13th, 2016 at the age of 57, Gordon passed in his sleep in Bellingham, WA.
Honoring Gordon’s wishes, we invite all friends and family to come and celebrate his life, share stories and memories. A casual pot-luck gathering will be held at the Neevel family river bar located at 7349 Ritter Rd, Ferndale WA at 5:00 PM on Friday June 24th. We ask if you are able to bring a side dish or dessert please do.

  1. Our thoughts and prayers are with David and Shawn and the Manthey family. Gordy was a very friendly, hard-working, great father and friend. Our son Kody loved hanging out and learning how to make Gordy’s famous chicken strips. All the kids loved him and he treated them like his own.He will be greatly missed by many. The Prosser family

  2. My condolences to my family, May Gordon rest in peace. He now has his Angel wings and is watching over everyone! Spread your wings and fly high!

As a UPS guy, I met Gordy years ago when he worked at another canopy place on the Guide. He was such a friendly guy and had a great sense of humor. Later, I delivered to his house by the creek on Aldrich. Gordy always seemed like an old friend even though we didn’t hang out much. Maybe in the great by and by we’ll make up for it. Life’s just too busy, and short! Gordy was a man of faith in God. I pray for comfort and peace, for all of his family……
