Obituary

Gloria Jean (Hubbard) Tawes passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on 3/8/2013 at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by two infant sons; her loving husband, Richard S. Tawes, in 2008; her sister Joyce Smith; and her brother Jack Hubbard.

Mrs. Tawes had been a lifelong resident of Whatcom County. She was born September 25, 1925 to Dewey and Hazel Hubbard. She married her long-time sweetheart, Richard, on November 24, 1945. Together they had a son, Richard L. Tawes, and the years that followed would prove to enrich their lives with the joy of having grandchildren; Shawndra Tawes of Bellingham, and Brent Tawes (wife Tonya) of Nampa, Idaho. This would even extend to having great-grandchildren; Brooke McKay-Tawes, and Raymond McKay-Tawes. By far, one of her lifes sweetest moments was when she became a great-great grandmother in 2009 to Charles, and again in 2011 to Jocelyn. Gloria would keep current with long phone conversations with her sister Donna Klander (husband Raymond) of Bellingham.

In her early years, Gloria was employed by the Pacific Northwest Bell and Gitts Red Top Floral. While her husband was still living, the two of them used to enjoy frequent camping trips. Even though Gloria was in her 80s, it came as no surprise to catch her gardening, or enjoying making beautiful knitted gifts for her family. She generously gave her time and energy to the community by volunteering at the Project Concern food bank. Gloria had many family members and friends in the community, and anyone who had the opportunity to get to know her on a personal level was always touched by the hospitality and kindness she showed. Thank you, Gloria, for all the love you graciously bestowed on all who knew you. You may share your thoughts and memories of Gloria in the online memorial guestbook at www.farewelltributes.com

  1. Dear Rich and family: So sad to see the obituary concerning your mom’s passing. I have such fond memories of her in my early years and had a chance to connect again with her when your folks built the house in North Bellingham. She was so proud of that house! As I entered this website I saw the great picture of her and wondered how long ago it was taken. She looked just the same as when I was a little girl. I hope that many fond memories flood your hearts and help to ease your sorrow, Nancy

Am saddened to learn of Gloria’s passing. I’ve been away from Bellingham so long I have not had much contact with the extended since my mother, Ellen, passed. I do remember many good times when we were all younger at the lake and in the county.

  3. Dearest Great aunt Gloria, You will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family at this time…..RIP Gloria…. Love Sheri and Family

  4. I will miss Gloria very much. My prayers and thoughts go out to her family. She gave me a lot of support when my uncle passed away last year and all of my 43 three years always had a smile that lit up the room.. I will miss her dearly…God Bless…
