Obituary

Dr. Burton Jay passed away peacefully in San Diego on December 13th, 2015 at the age of 81. He was loved and respected by Susan, his wife of 59 years, his children and their spouses, Michael and Mary, Danny and Noelle, & Debby and Dave as well as his grandchildren, Sarah, Joshua, Jordan, Jeremy and Elliott.

Burton Jay was born in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest of five children. He received degrees from Alfred University and Albert Einstein School of Medicine, served his country as a flight surgeon in the Air Force, and practiced medicine for 37 years as a dermatologist, chief of his department at Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in San Diego.

Burton had many passions throughout his life. He was an avid reader, gardener, gentleman farmer, environmentalist and enjoyed sailing. He and Susan shared a love for opera and classical music and remain great supporters of the arts. Whatever the cause or organization with which Burton became involved, he rose to a position of leadership, guiding others along the way.

He cared deeply about the world around him ranging from political and environmental issues to the plight of those less fortunate and Jewish causes. Much of what he did was unknown to others as he was a man who did for others because it was the right thing to do, never asking for recognition or something in return. He treated everyone with the respect they deserve. He will be missed by all who knew him and his spirit will live on as we are all better people for having known him.

A Jewish graveside funeral service was held for Dr. Burton Jay on Tuesday, December 15th, 2015 in Bellingham, Washington followed by a reception attended by many caring and loving friends and family.

  1. Dr. Burton Jay was my Chief of Service in the Department of Dermatology in San Diego, CA from 9/2/75 until he had retired from Kaiser, I learned one special thing about working for Dr. Jay and that was when someone on the job had a problem instead of taking the situation to him as Chief to start working out the problem with the person of concern first I was the Senior Service Representative in the Department for 34 years and Patient Advocate which was not an easy task to handle angry customers including working closely with the Admin. Team. When I was interviewed to work at Kaiser Dr. Jay told me when can you start and told me that I out talked him and answer all the questions to his satisfaction, I was only 21 years old when I started and retired in 2009 at the age of 55 years old which I thank God for the Blessing to do so.
Just several months ago I saw Dr. Jay and Mrs. Jay at the Vandever Pharmacy in San Diego which made my day which I had told him that I was diagnose with Glaucoma and was told that I was going Blind and declined the eye implant surgery which was no guaranteed and Dr. Jay told me that there is no Guaranteed in Life and one thing I wanted to share with Dr. Jay is that he taught me to have compassion in life after all the years of working for him and I always tell my Kaiser Doctors about working for Dr. Jay Chief of Dermatology that Compassion is the Key of Life and Guaranteed to work especially from the Heart not just the ethics of the job I never let any one treat me wrong because I think of Dr. Jay a Man of Honor for Compassion like my father was the man of honesty and live up to his name Mr. Honor now I know that Dr. Jay is the Angel of Spirit in Heaven in the Compassion Area looking down and watching over his family and friends I want to Thank You for the good years at Kaiser under your Watch.

  2. Gentleman physician.Rest in peace Dr. Jay.

Dr. Jay was my dermatologist in the years prior to his retirement from Kaiser. He was a good and kind man, with a clear sense of when to be firm about liberal use of sunscreen and comforting when tackling a patient’s dermatological issues. Although the tasks that came before him every day were very likely a matter of routine to him, he never allowed me to think that I was just a number among the hundreds of patients in his care.
I hope that his retirement years were happy ones. He certainly made the world a better place by being in it.

    Please accept my sympathies.
