Obituary

David (Dave) Henry Braun died suddenly at home on January 29, 2018. Dave came to Whatcom County from Joliet, IL. He was a teacher at Lummi Nation School where he taught Science and Traditional Arts for more than 20 years. In addition to those subjects, he was passionate about history. He loved spending time outdoors or working on various projects in his garage. He was also an accomplished artist with paintings ranging from small canvases to entire walls. Some of his murals can be seen at the Two Medicine Dinosaur Center in Bynum, MT, where he spent many summers fossil-hunting with his friend Dave Trexler; and on walls throughout Lummi Nation High School.

Dave is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Jacqueline A. Braun; cherished cousin Nancy (Frank) Principe of Anacortes and numerous relatives throughout the country; and dear friend Andy Ward and many adored friends. He will be remembered as a devoted friend of the Lummi Nation.

Per Dave’s wishes, there will be no funeral services.

  1. Jackie,
It is with some shock and sadness that I write this to you. I was looking up old friends when I came across this obituary. Dave was truly a dear man, and someone I looked up to greatly. He had such a huge impact on me and the trajectory of my life. (As well as all his students at Lummi). I will never forget him. I am really finding it hard to believe he is gone. It has been almost exactly a year this next week. I do hope you see this and know that I am thinking about you from the other side of the world. We have lost a truly good man.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Dave’s passing. He and I first met when LNHS was in the large portable near the elementary portables. We then caught up to each other after the new building was up and enjoyed more years teaching together. I respected Dave and touched bases with him often during the course of any week. Although my passion for Drama and Creativity was at times over the top, Dave was quiet and steady. Yet we were able to talk peacefully and with deep understanding. I know how much he’ll be missed at Lummi High. The students have been left with memories of a great friend. Walk on, Dave, we’ll catch up later …

  3. I am so sorry for your loss, I was one of his students Alysia Rosario class 2005, he also taught my older sister Rita Rosario. I remember watching him paint such beautiful artwork at school. Also he would bring his yellow corn snake Kellogg which terrified me since I am scared of snakes. I remember going on a field trip up the mountains and many more other things. He taught me photograph and the dark room and in his tiny dark room at our old high school one hallway. My older sister Rita Rosario loved his classroom and my other relatives at Lummi High School. He loved teaching his students and was a dedicated teacher and he’ll be missed dearly. I only wished that my oldest son could had him for a teacher.
