Obituary

Catherine Mae Grover, age 86, died on March 12, 2020 at Highgate Senior Living, where she had been living since 2015. She is preceded in death by her husband Burton Grover, who passed away in 2016. She is survived by her children Dan Grover, Steve Grover, Matt (Tom Bernard) Grover, Beth (Antonio Duato) Grover; and her grandchildren Sarah Duato-Grover and Andrea Duato-Grover.

Cathy was born on April 10, 1933 in Virginia, MN. She attended Gustavus Adolphus University and the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in home economics from the University of Minnesota. After college, she taught high school in Winnebago, MN and Cambridge, MN.

Cathy met Burt Grover while teaching in Cambridge, and they were married in her family home in Virginia on June 18, 1960. They lived in Manitowoc, WI from 1963 to 1969 (where they had all four children) before moving to Bellingham in 1969. Cathy and Burt were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their children in Kona, Hawaii in 2010.

Cathy and Burt traveled extensively throughout the United States and to Europe, Asia, South America and Mexico. They enjoyed the fine arts, with frequent trips to Vancouver for opera and Ashland, OR for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Cathy was an active member of Central Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for many years. She was also active in Women of Western (WWU), local advocacy groups for special needs children and adults, and Lydia Place. Visiting her at home, you would always hear the Mariners on the radio, or find the Sonics or Seahawks on the television. She indulged her lifelong passions of gardening, reading and quilting, and many family friends with new babies have enjoyed receiving a quilt from Cathy. Her positive attitude and sense of humor will be missed.

A Celebration of Cathy’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2:00 pm at Moles Farewell Tributes, 2465 Lakeway Dr, Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Lydia Place www.lydiaplace.org.
