Obituary

On the evening of May 30th, 2023, Brian Eric Funk; a husband, son, brother, friend, and father, was welcomed into his heavenly home surrounded by family and friends. Brian was born in Port Angeles, Washington on June 14th, 1966, to Erich Fritz Funk and Ruth Storck before moving to Bellingham.

In Brian’s early life, he spent much of his time playing with a gaggle of neighborhood buddies (Hof, Goob, Bob, Burns, Lynch boys, Andy, Kruzich and many others) running through St. Clair Park and Whatcom Falls – always backyard hopping to get where they needed to go. Brian would spend most summers in south-western Germany in Donaueschingen, where his mother was raised, as well as Wiesbaden where his father was from. Brian attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Whatcom Middle School and graduated from Sehome High School in 1984. He worked at the cement plant on Marine Drive, then Recomp and finally Econgen which became Puget Sound Energy. Brian loved working and was enamored with turbines. Brian and Shannon began dating after a friends’ wedding, were engaged a month later, and eventually married after a year-long engagement. They just celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on November 30th, 2022.

Brian was a lover of sports of all kinds – basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling – he loved it all. One of Brian’s favorite things to do was watch his kids play sports and give his honest and well-intentioned critique after many of their games and tournaments over the years. Along with this, his children thank him graciously for their impeccable taste in music, which was heavily influenced and fostered by Brian’s unwavering love of rock n’ roll.

Brian is remembered by his family as a goofy, sports and classic rock loving man with a stubborn demeanor and a heart of gold. Brian touched the hearts of friends and family alike with his admirable spirit, boisterous wit, and love of life. Among many of his childrens’ friends, Brian was beloved, earning him the nickname of B-ri.

Brian was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth (Storck) Funk; Father Erich Funk; father-in-law Richard Montag and several close friends. Brian is survived by his wife Shannon, his three children (Briley, Christina, and Tommy), his mother-in-law Sheridan Montag, sister-in- law Stacy Montag, brother-in-law Steven Montag (wife Tracy), nephews (Marcus Montag, Evan Funk, Eric Riley, Troy Riley), niece (Ashley Ohl), and sister (Brenda Riley) and wonderful friends Ivan and Andrea Mott.

A celebration of life will be held at Moles Farewell Tributes – Bayview Chapel on Tuesday June 6th at 1:00PM.

Shannon and kids – I can’t tell you how sorry I am for your loss. Brian and I started at Encogen the same day, were close work friends until I left in early 2000, and continued our friendship beyond then when we would periodically connect. We played basketball together, talked, and laughed endlessly about kids, sports, and life.
He was hard-working, honest, and didn’t mince words – one of my all-time favorite coworkers. We all lost a good one with Brian’s passing, but that pales in comparison to your loss, and for that, I am genuinely sorry.
He loved you deeply, was incredibly proud of you, and did what he did out of that love for you. At work, that was abundantly clear.
With Lisa’s and my deepest condolences.
