Obituary

Alyce was born and lived in Ferndale, WA with her parents, Mason and Bobbi Jo Oxford. As a child, Alyce loved to sing and tap dance and was very active in all school activities and clubs. She met Don, her husband, in 2nd grade and he told his mom that he was going to marry her someday. That day happened on October 24th, 1947.

They lived in Ferndale until Don accepted a job in Concrete working for Puget Power. Everyone knew Don as the guy with two dogs riding in the front seat of his line truck. Alyce worked for Lone Star Industries in Concrete as an executive secretary. She loved her work. When the plant shut down in 1968, she went to work as the clerk for the city of Concrete. She was always the most meticulous and efficient worker.

She loved to bake; we always had wonderful meals and a warm, safe home to grow up in. Alyce and Don loved to go fishing and hunting, playing cards, and visiting with family. They just really enjoyed each other’s company. They would come down to see the grandkids that were involved in sporting events as they grew up, and, in the last ten years, we set up monthly family dinners, so she got to see the grandkids and six great-grandkids. They were her pride and joy. The love she felt for those kids was so enduring and genuine, they knew that great-grandma loved them. In her later years, she lived independently on Samish Island in Bow, WA. She loved living on the water and all those pink sunsets. She enjoyed watching sports on TV and she bowled every week until she was 93 years old. Alyce had spunk and a kind heart. She was someone that didn’t see the color of your skin, only the smile on your face.

Alyce was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 2002.

She is survived by her children, Steve (Barb), Rick, and Nancy (Rob); four grandkids; and six great-grandkids.

Her final resting place will be Enterprise Cemetery in Ferndale.

  1. Alyce was a friendly and gregarious person. I always enjoyed talking with her when I would see her at Nancy’s home. I saw her at a casino once having lunch, and she hugged me and introduced me to her bowling buddies as Nancy’s friend. Her biggest love was her family and she would love sharing stories of them and adored them all. She had a wonderful 90th Roaring 20’s Birthday Party with everyone in costume. She lived a long and active life adored and loved by her family and she will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

I’m so sorry to have missed all of this. She was a great lady and one of my mother’s favorite cousins. They are all together again!

What a beautiful service honoring Alyce Mae. We have dear memories of your Mom & Dad, some stories had been told to us by our Mom & Dad(Harry & Merrilee), from their school days in Ferndale to their young married lives. As a child I remember playing at the Carnation building and the house where you lived. Running around without a care in the world. As an adult your Mom n Dad flew to Kauai, for Russell and mine wedding in 1977. Question being was the island of Kauai ready for the women and Harry, Art, Frank, Don, Uncle Elmer, and Uncle Ed. my oh my they had some ‘Good Times’. Russell and I felt honored with their attendance. Family is and always will be. Alyce Mae a few years back boarded a Casino Senior Center bus from down south, they had arranged to visit Ferndale on Old Settlers Weekend. She looked us up and we visited for quite a while, in the ‘The Beer Garden’, she visited the next year again. It was such a treat, yes memories of her will always put a smile and a warm thought in our hearts, and I will dance like no one is watching. God Bless you all and our thoughts and prayers for comfort are with you all
Our Aloha, Russell and Lori Apana
