Obituary

Patricia Ann (Pat) Newman of Bellingham, WA left this earth in peace at age 85 as a result of natural causes on April 7, 2016.
Pat was born on September 4, 1930 in Hackett, Arkansas to Myrtle and Jess Mooneyham. She married Sherman (Bud) Newman in Hackett on February 21, 1948 following his return from the Navy; WWII. The young couple, with baby Randy, moved from Arkansas to Los Angeles in 1949 to join Pat’s siblings who had moved there earlier. Subsequently, Bud was hired by General Petroleum Corporation (Mobil Oil) and worked at its Torrance, CA refinery. In 1953, Pat, Bud, and sons Randy, Ron and Steve, moved to Bellingham where Bud was part of the startup team of the new Mobil Oil refinery in Ferndale, WA. Two more sons, Ken and Don, were born in Bellingham where Pat and Bud resided the remainder of their lives raising five sons. After their sons were grown, Pat worked for the Bellingham School District preparing lunches for students at Shuksan Middle School.
Pat enjoyed spending time with family, reading novels, travel by trailer, and wintering in Yuma, AZ. She immensely enjoyed bowling in her early years and later playing Pinochle with her lady friends until she suffered a stroke a few years ago. Pat was dubbed the “Pie Grandma” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the terrific fruit and cream pies that greeted them on each visit.
Preceding her in death are her husband of 61 years, Bud, and their son, Steve, her brothers Arvin, Kenneth, Olen (Monk), Cliff and LeRoy, and her sisters Thelma and Reba. Pat is survived by her sons Randall (Yvonne) of Portland, OR; Ronald (Simone) of Fairfield, CA; Kenneth (Jackie) of Yorba Linda, CA; and Donald of Ferndale, WA; and daughter-in-law Lesley (Steve) of Bellingham, WA.
Pat loved her many grandchildren – Eric, Amy, Julie, Brian, Matthew, Allison, Mary, Sarah and Cassandra, and great-grandchildren – Angelique, Sarah, Alexander, Aislinn, Nicholas, Austin, Ryleigh, Maddex, Calista and Madilyn.
The family would like to express their gratitude and thankfulness for the valuable support and care extended by the staff of Highgate Assisted Living, Highland Health and Rehabilitation, and Hospice of Whatcom County.
