Obituary

Paul R. Brass, age 85, passed away at home in Acme, WA on May 31, 2022, with his loving wife Susan at his side. Paul was born on November 8, 1936, in Boston, MA to Albert and Eva Brass née Bavely.

He attended the Boston Latin School from 1948 to 1954. In 1958 Paul graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a B.A. in government. He received his M.A. in political science from the University of Chicago in 1959 followed by a Ph.D. in political science in 1964, also from the University of Chicago. In 1965 Paul started teaching at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington. He retired as professor emeritus of political science and international studies. He made extensive studies of the Indian subcontinent, publishing numerous books and articles on South Asian politics, ethnic politics, and collective violence.

Aside from his passion for academic life, Paul loved the outdoors and hiking the mountain trails wherever he found them. He enjoyed classical music, cooking and wine, and his retirement in the ‘Boondocks’.

He is preceded in death by brother-in-law Avi Yoeli. Paul is survived by: wife Susan Brass née Connor; daughter Leah Sarah Livesey (Itzik); son David Michael Brass; sister Frances Yoeli; nephews Raan Yoeli (Galit), Amir Makieli-Yoeli (Justine) & Omri Hadas (Theresa); nieces Taal Goldman (Dubi) & Naava Yoeli-Bligh (Gur); and 3 grandchildren Noah, Zoe, and Fern.
