Obituary
Kay Knies, loving mother, grandma and devoted friend, passed away on October 24 at the age
of 80 in Bellingham. Kay was born in Bruno, Arkansas to Florene and Varin Sasser and moved
to Yakima, WA after WWII. She graduated from Highland High School in 1961 where she was a
songleader and played saxophone in the Scottie Band. Kay graduated from Yakima Valley
College and Washington State University. After college, Kay moved to Bellingham where she
had her two sons and established a wonderful network of lifelong friends.
Kay worked for WWU, BTC, Morse Hardware and the City of Bellingham but said her most
important, challenging and rewarding job was raising her sons. Kay was an avid reader,
crossword puzzle master, talented seamstress and a wonderful cook. We will miss her
intelligence, amazing memory, quick and dry sense of humor and her laugh.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by sons Mike Knies of Austin, TX
and John (Sara) Knies of Bellingham and two grandchildren.
Kay loved to laugh and socialize with friends. In lieu of a service, Kay requests that you enjoy a
meal with family and friends. Memorials may be made to Friends of the Bellingham Public
Library or Whatcom Hospice.

We just want to send our sincere sympathy to John and family and to Mike on the loss of your dear mom and grandma. We remember you boys from school days and your mom from being at a few basketball games back at BHS. Those were fun times and your mom was always so sweet and fun. We hope you have good memories knowing she is happy and healthy in her FOREVER HOME, to help ease the pain of losing her. Sending love to all of you,
Hank and Kathy Poortinga
