Marilyn Phoebe Brown

Marilyn Phoebe Brown (née Smith), age 95, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025, in Lynden, Washington. Her long and full life was marked by warmth, humor, and a deep love for her family and the simple joys of everyday living. Born in Iowa on March 27, 1930, to her parents Richard and Lola Smith, Marilyn grew up with a strong sense of family and faith. Throughout her life, she remained grounded in her values and was known for her genuine spirit and easygoing nature. Those who knew her often described her as loving, hardworking, caring, and a true joy to be around. A graduate from Nooksack Valley High School, Marilyn shared 64 years of marriage with her beloved husband Clem Brown, who passed away in 2013. She was also a devoted mother to their two children, Doug Brown, who passed away in 2019 and Sandy Petersen. Her legacy continues through her daughter Sandy (Bill) Petersen, as well as daughter-in-law Debbie Brown. She was a proud grandmother to Chad Veenstra, Marty (Christie) Brown and the late Tom Veenstra and Jason Brown. Her love extended across generations to her great-grandchildren Ella Brown, Brady Brown, Jatender (Damien) De La Rosa, Erika Veenstra, Coby Veenstra, Tysen Veenstra, Maxim Veenstra, Bowen Veenstra and further still to her many great-great-grandchildren whose lives are part of the enduring family tree she helped nurture. Marilyn is also survived by her sister Peggy Compton. Marilyn’s siblings that proceeded her in death are Glen, Joyce, Leonard, Lucille and Maurice. A woman of many interests, Marilyn found joy in playing cards with friends and family—a pastime that brought laughter and connection into countless gatherings. She had a fondness for collecting frogs, each one a small token of whimsy that reflected her playful side. Her hands were rarely idle; she loved painting, crocheting and knitting beautiful pieces that became cherished keepsakes for those lucky enough to receive them. Her faith was an important part of her life. Guided by a love of God, Marilyn lived with grace and compassion that touched everyone around her. Though she has left this world, Marilyn’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May the warmth she shared continue to bring comfort to those who mourn her passing. Marilyn’s family would like to profusely thank the amazing and loving staff of the Christian Health Care Center.
