Obituary

Judith Ann (Judy) Hughes, passed away on November 5, 2024 at the age of 91.  Judy was born in Los Angeles on August 16, 1933, to John O. and Ruth Yeasting.

Judy graduated from West Seattle High School in 1951 and furthered her education by earning a Mrs. degree (her words!) from the University of Washington/Vic Hughes.   They lived in West Seattle where they raised their 4 children.  The family spent most of their weekends and vacations at their special property near Doe Bay on Orcas Island.  In 1968, the family began their labor of love by building a new home on the property.  Judy took great pride in single-handedly putting every shingle on the outside of that large three-story house.  During the school years, Judy spent the summers with the kids on the property while Vic commuted from Seattle each weekend to be with the family.

Judy’s personal life was enriched by her hobbies, which included playing bridge and bowling while living in West Seattle, activities that she enjoyed immensely and shared with close friends, including lifelong Pi Beta Phi sorority sisters.  Judy played bridge on Orcas with friends for many years and was in great demand as a bridge partner.  Judy also enjoyed sewing and needle work as well as cheering on local sports teams on TV from her favorite chair in front of the fire.  Judy’s wish was to live out her life on beautiful Orcas Island, which she was able to do until her health required greater care off island late this summer.

For many years Judy was a volunteer for the Orcas Island Food Bank and served on the board as secretary/treasurer.  She was very proud of her work helping to enable the building of the new Food Bank facility.

Judy is survived by her children:  Ken Hughes (Lael), Kathy Hughes (Bob Thomas), and Karen Wieland (Bob), grandchildren:  Chrissy Hughes (Jamie Inouye), Maddie Hughes (Eric Bice), and Garrett Hughes (Emily): and one special great grandson, Lyel Inouye-Hughes who brought great joy to Grandma in the last year of her life.    She has nieces and nephews from her brother’s Yeasting family: Suze, Linda, Bill and John and Rick from the Hughes family.  Judy is also survived by sister-in-law Rita Yeasting.   Judy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Vic Hughes in 1995; her son, Steve Hughes; and her twin brother, Bob Yeasting.

Judy’s life was a testament to the love and care she extended to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in the memories of her family and friends.
