Jeffrey Hugh Chalfant

Jeffrey Hugh Chalfant unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Ferndale, Washington, at the age of 53. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, loving husband, proud father, steadfast friend, and respected leader, Jeff lived a life marked by integrity, humility, quiet strength, and unwavering faith. Jeff was born on August 21, 1972, in Bellingham, Washington, to Hugh Jr. and Kris (Nordvedt) Chalfant. He attended Bellingham schools and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1990, where he proudly played soccer for the Red Raiders-with the mullet to match. He later graduated from Western Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, Urban & Regional Planning, and Economics. Jeff and Michelle began dating during their senior year of high school and were married on May 2, 1998, in Bellingham. Together they built a life rooted in faith, filled with laughter, playful teasing, unconditional love, and countless adventures. Years later, they discovered that their story had actually begun much earlier as preschoolers at St. Paul's Little Epistles Preschool. Jeff was the little boy proudly wearing brand-new cowboy boots, and one of those boots somehow found its way into Michelle's leg. What seemed like an ordinary childhood moment became one of their favorite stories-and the unexpected beginning of a lifetime together. Above all, Jeff's greatest joy was his children, Nathan and Emily. Being their father was the greatest privilege of his life, and nothing made him prouder than watching them grow into the remarkable people they have become. He loved them beyond measure and never missed an opportunity to tell them so. Music was one of Jeff's greatest passions. During his college days at Western, as a founding member of Section 43, his journey took him from a Bellingham basement to countless local and regional stages, including opening for the Posies, and performing alongside Pinwheel before its members formed Death Cab for Cutie. Jeff treasured the lifelong friendships he maintained from his high school and college years and deeply valued his BP family-the coworkers and friends who walked beside him through years of shared challenges, laughter, and purpose. He began his career with Barghausen Consulting Engineers before serving Whatcom County Planning & Development Services. In 2007, Jeff joined BP Cherry Point, where he spent more than 17 years in a variety of leadership roles, concluding his career as Refinery Operations Senior Manager. He earned the respect of colleagues through his integrity, fairness, and thoughtful leadership. Those who knew Jeff knew they could count on him. He remained calm in the midst of chaos, bringing clarity and reassurance when others felt overwhelmed. He was the steady presence his family leaned on-their rock. If Jeff didn't know how to do something, he quietly taught himself until he did. He had a gift for helping others through difficult moments, offering wisdom, perspective, and a steady voice of reason. Despite his many accomplishments, Jeff never sought recognition. He quietly went about helping others, believing the greatest work was often done behind the scenes. His greatest desire was simply to make a meaningful difference. He measured success not by titles or accomplishments, but by whether he had loved God well and served others faithfully. His life was guided by a simple purpose: to love the Lord and to love people. Jeff found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved hunting, fishing, and packing into the mountains with his horses. He enjoyed treasure hunting at garage sales and antique shops and never passed up a "FREE" sign, convinced there wasalways the possibility of discovering something worthwhile. He loved collecting vinyl records and always had another project underway. In retirement, he dreamed of restoring one of his favorite finds-a 1948 cab-over Ford truck. He was always up for a challenge and more often than not won his gym's monthly competitions, something his family lovingly teased him about because he rarely missed a workout-even on Christmas Day. Jeff was rarely seen without his oversized coffee cup in hand, enjoyed a good whiskey sour, and found great relaxation listening to his extensive record collection. He was known for quoting favorite movie lines and leaving hand-drawn SpongeBob sketches on restaurant receipts, napkins, whiteboards, and just about anything else he could find, bringing smiles to everyone around him. Jeff is survived by his wife, Michelle; his children, Nathan (Kaylee) and Emily; his parents, Hugh Jr. and Kris Chalfant; his sister, Karey (Keith) Jones and their children; his sister-in-law, Andrea Austin and her children; along with many extended family members, dear friends, and colleagues who will miss him deeply. Though our hearts ache in Jeff's absence, we do not grieve without hope. Because our faith is firmly rooted in Jesus Christ, we know this separation is only temporary. We rejoice in the promise of eternal life through Christ and look forward with joyful anticipation to the day we are reunited in Him. Until then, we will cherish his memory, live out the love he showed us, and carry forward the legacy of faith, kindness, and joy he leaves behind.
