Obituary

James “Jim” Thomas Moore, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather entered his heavenly home on May 11, 2023. Jim was born August 13, 1937, in Sunnyside, Washington to Thomas Moore and Esther Lemmon Moore. He was four years old when his family moved to Whatcom County. He graduated from Mt. Baker High School in 1956 and went on to serve with the Army National Guard. In 1962, Jim married Penelope “Penny” York and they raised four children together. Jim worked 37 years at Georgia Pacific in Bellingham before retiring in 1999.  In March 2023, Jim and Penny celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Jim was a hard worker and always had a project to do. He enjoyed farming, raising animals, mowing the lawn, gardening, and helping others. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with family and friends. Fond memories shared by his grandchildren include underage driving lessons around the farm in his red Nissan pickup.  They will remember fondly the blue hard hat he wore everywhere. He stood out in the crowd.

A big smile, firm handshake, quick sense of humor, and boisterous laughter are just a few traits Jim was known for. He received Christ as his Savior in 1973 and was devoted to loving and serving the Lord with a fearless passion. His commitment to the Lord showed through his ability to quote scripture, the Bible studies he led, along with church boards he served on. He lived by example, sharing his gift of evangelism with everyone, and has left a spiritual legacy that leaves his loved ones comforted.

Jim is survived by his wife, Penny, his daughters Penny (Rod) Visser, Leah (Bill) MacDonough and son, Matt (Lori) Moore; grandchildren Julie (David) Lukens, Christie (Michael) Goudy, Terry Visser, Kacie (Joel) Bennett, Jared (Heidi) Masters, Brady (Emily) Moore and Lindsey Moore as well as 7 great-grandchildren.  He leaves behind sister Beverly Holdt, sister-in-law Diane Moore, brother-in-law Bill (Judy) York, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Troy Moore, brother Ron Moore, brother-in-law Al Holdt, brother-in-law Pat York, sister-in-law Charolette York, and nephew Kevin Monaghan.

  1. Always a good friend who lifted my spirits and made me smile. I will see him on the “other side”

  2. So sorry for your loss, Penny and family. Jim was a lovely man. He always asked me if I ” had a shilling” because of my English heritage 😊. Heaven gained a good one. Hugs to the family.

Jim was an inspiring guy. His enthusiasm for following the Lord, knowing God better, and sharing the gospel with the lost caused me to rethink my priorities as a young man who was busy with family and work. There is always time for the important things, and Jim showed me what those things are. Thank you, Lord, for letting me know Jim for a few years.
