Gilbert Giles Robinson

Gilbert G. Robinson, beloved husband and father, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Robbie was born in Portland, Oregon, January 26, 1927. During the latter part of World War II he was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base (Texas), where he met and married his wife. He served in the Philippines for nearly two years. Following his service he graduated from Oregon State College in 1952. During the summers at college he worked in Depoe Bay, OR where his parents, Howard and Florence (Gilbert) Robinson owned a grocery store and Robbie worked as 1st Mate on the Tradewind Kingfisher; during other summers he and his wife lived and worked in a lookout for the Forestry Service in Eastern Oregon. Robbie was a Research Scientist with NASA in Mt. View, CA. Well known for his numerous projects at NASA, one of which hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (Orbiting Solar Observatory) and was involved with the development of the computer to photograph the back side of the Moon. During his years at NASA he also taught classes in Air Frame and Power Plant at the Palo Alto Community College for twenty years. For many years Robbie and his wife traveled and showed Scottish Terriers. After retirement from NASA in 1986, Robbie and Neatha moved to Bellingham. His love of flying led to his restoration of an antique 1941 Interstate Cadet, now owned by his son, Steve, who found it 30 years later and is now in the process of restoring the Interstate again. Preceded in death by his brother, John J. Robinson, Robbie is survived by his loving wife of nearly 67 years, Neatha, and his beloved son, Stephen G. Robinson and daughter-in-law, Jody Robinson of Livermore CA, his Sisters-in-law and Brother-in-law: Linda J. Long, Celia L. Dugan, Judy L. Gray, Arizona, Richard Scott and his wife Maria from New Mexico. He was a member of the American Modelers Assoc., Experimental Aircraft Assoc, Scottish Terrier Club of America, Life Member of the Whidbey Island Kennel Club, and the Mt. Baker Kennel Club. Memorial services will be at the Chapel at Moles Farewell Tributes-Bellingham on Friday, September 14th at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception.
