Earl was my neighbor on the hill. He kept me apprised of wildlife sightings, stray cats, and his dobies. I rescued some of the strays, baked him an occasional blackberry pie, and let him know when a fence was down.
One of my favorite grey and white felines came from Earl. Someone had shoved this cat in his mailbox and when he opened the mailbox, the cat flew out. Lil’ Dude found a home with me.

He was a considerate man who always asked about my log home and how my teaching was coming along.

I’m smiling as I remember one of our phone conversations. I was concerned about the safety of my cats given the numerous coyote yippings on a particular evening. The sounds were definitely coming from his hillside so I assumed that he was watching a pack devour a meal. Such was not the case. Earl was imitating their vocalizations. It was so realistic that even my rotties had joined the chorus.

I am sorry for the loss of your dad, brother, and uncle. Earl was an institution on the hill.
