Obituary

Charles E. Marquart passed away on March 16, 2021. He was born in Sumas and graduated from Darrington High School.

Chuck was a hardworking man. Even as a child he worked hard. He used to tell stories of collecting beer bottles after dances at Damn Town, the grange hall in Sumas where he also worked on the family farm. In high school he worked part-time at the mill, and bought his first hot rod, a Model A, at age 15.

Chuck enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1951-1955. He was stationed in San Antonio. During the Korean War he served as an airplane mechanic in Okinawa. After the service Chuck worked in construction and loved to tell the story of working on La Connor’s iconic red bridge. In 1967, he started at Intalco and retired as a supervisor from Alcoa in 1988.

It was at Kovac’s Restaurant in 1976, with one simple phrase “Can I warm you up,” that it was love at first cup. He married the love of his life, Baerbel (Babs), Hawaiian-style, in 1981. Together they enjoyed traveling, sailing the San Juans, motorcycling, RVing, and of course, hot rodding. They were active members of the Whatcom County Cruising Association and Elites Car Club. Chuck attended many classic car shows with his hot rods.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Nellie Marquart, his brothers Archie, Alvin, and Wesley Marquart. He is survived by his wife, Baerbel, and their combined family. Sons Chucky, Mike, Richard, and Raymond, and daughters Iris and Claire, and numerous grand and great grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors at 2 p.m. on March 26, 2021 at Bayview Cemetery, in Bellingham, WA.

Weather permitting, please drive your hot rod in a farewell tribute rod run in Chuck’s honor.

Donations on Chuck’s behalf can be made to the Elite’s charity, Project Santa Claus
