Obituary

Fred Meyers, Capt. (Ret) US Navy, passed away on Monday, October 18th, 2021. Born in St. Paul, MN in 1933. Fred was a hardworking man, who lived every day to the fullest. He loved spending time with his wife Jeanine, traveling the US to spend time with the people he loved. When he wasn’t traveling, he could usually be found on the boat with a fishing pole in hand, enjoying the occasional cigar on the patio, hunting, or on the softball field.

Fred was a naval aviator and served in the Navy for many years until his retirement as Capt. Frederick Paul Meyers in 1982. A man of honor and integrity, Fred led the members of the No. 75 Squadron, teaching them to fly the 14 A-4 Skyhawks in New Zealand.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Louise Meyers, parents, Harry and Agnes, Brothers Clare, Harry, & Jerry, sister Diane, and his grandson, Bryan Fowler. Fred will be dearly missed and always loved by his wife Jeanine (Beasley), brother Roger Meyers (Marie), daughters; Yvonne Nottnagel (Jerry), Terri Steele (Bill), and Laurie Moreland, stepchildren; Rhett Barnes (Mary), Tyler Barnes (Misty), Chad Barnes (Nancy), Darren Barnes (Tamara), Tara Crowson (Todd), and Danielle Barnes (Ben), as well as his 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family friends, and his Navy, softball, and cigar buddies.

Due to COVID, a celebration of life will be held later in 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s or another charity in Fred’s name.

    Jeanine and family,

I played softball with Fred in SCPD he was an amazing man playing until his mid eighties and his stories about his Navy career were priceless especially after a drink and a cigar. He was a man of great character and would help anyone in need. Condolences to you and your family and may all of your great memories be with all of you at this most difficult time.

    Blessings,

    Myron Yurko

    Laurie and the entire family,

I was saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing. Along with my own father and John Bennett’s father, your dad set the example of a person I wanted to be. I loved hearing his squadron stories and loved learning about leadership and naval aviation from him. You may not remember , but he wrote a letter of recommendation for me to attend Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1986. I believe that endorsement helped my application and led to me earning my own commission in 1987! I still have a copy of that letter in my scrapbook. One of the things I am thankful for was the opportunity to share a beer with him and Ed Davis in Lemoore when I was transitioning from the S-3 Viking to the FA-18F Super Hornet and I am so happy I was able to tell him how much I admired him. Even then, he provided insight into commanding a squadron of my own. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

    Love, Bob Geis

Laurie, Yvonne & Teri, my heart goes out to you all. Fred ‘Mr. Meyers’ was the best next door neighbor ever! He and my dad brought us kids together, and he was my other dad on the block. Laurie, you are still my sister I never had! Love you and sending my prayers and hugs to you all.
