Obituary

Bud Duppenthaler passed away on Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 of complications due to interstitial lung disease at the age of 90.
He was born on July 11, 1925 in Bellingham, Washington to Louis and Agnes (Gabrielson) Duppenthaler and resided at 918 Lakeway Drive for much of his young life.
His infectious smile, laughter, and happiness will be missed by all who knew him.
His favorite pastimes were hunting, playing the “gut bucket” with the Washington Old Time Fiddlers, golfing and traveling.
He left Bellingham High School in 1943 to join the Army and became a “belly gunner” in a B-24 bomber and attended many reunions of their group over the years. He received an honorary discharge in 1945 having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After WWII, he returned to Bellingham where he worked many jobs. He commercially fished, delivered fuel oil, and moved houses and then found employment with the Milwaukee Road railway in the early 1950’s.
He officially retired from the railroad at the young age of 56 and travelled throughout the continental US, Mexico, and Alaska.
He is survived by his wife Merna of the Ferndale home who he married on February 2nd, 2014 in Blanchard, WA; his sons: Dick (Kristi) of Bellingham, WA; Victor (Marilyn) of Zhuhai, China; and John (Chris) of Midland, Texas, 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. If the name is Duppenthaler, he was related.
He was also a step-dad to Merna’s daughters: Karla (Kelly) Schuhow of Bellingham; Lisa (Steve) Kerzman of Ferndale; and Melinda (Chad) Bergman of Bellingham, and their families.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Del, his wife Norma Jean, and son Greg.

  3. Bud was a good friend and fellow musician who regularly attended performances of the Old Time Fiddlers in Mount Vernon, WA. We loved his rendition of “Working on the Railroad,” and appreciated his enthusiastic support of all of us musicians. He famously played his”gut bucket” at all of our playouts. Bud’s big smile would light up the room! We send our love and condolences to Myrna and his family. Rest in peace, dear friend!

  4. My heart goes out to you and your families. My dad and mom couldn’t have better neighbors all those years. There are a lot of good memories. Bud was a kind and hardworking man who was always smiling when he met you. He loved you boys and your mom very much. My prayers are with you. Diane

  5. Please know that I’m saying a prayer for Bud. He was always in a good mood and had a brilliant smile and laugh. My daughter, Stacy, remembers him telling her he was 103 yrs old. This was during a time when he stayed with our folks in Seattle, when he was down here working for the railroad. I think he stayed with them twice that I can remember. Stacy was very young at that time, and he was trying to convince her that he was 103. She wasn’t sure he really was. Now she’s 53 and still remembers the 103 yr old man.
Bud and Norma were always considered relatives by our parents, Chet and Shirley Blackinton and the rest of our family. Condolences from the Blackinton Family.
