Albert Currier

Albert Currier was born on March 6, 1948 in Rochester, New Hampshire, and was Albert W. Currier Sr. and Dorothy Gilson’s only child. He grew up and went through grade school in Farmington, New Hampshire, graduating from Farmington High School in the summer of 1966. By the fall of 1966 he was off to begin his service to the Lord at Berkshire Christian College in Lennox, Massachusetts. In 1968 he met the love of his life, Edith Currier, and after many dates and sweetheart dances, they were married on June 6, 1970 in the chapel of Berkshire Christian College. They honeymooned in Vermont, to visit the granite quarry, see a big town called Barre, Vermont, and then spent a week at a cabin on Sabago Lake in Windham, Maine. When they got back from their honeymoon, Al began his ministry in Minturn, Maine. It was an awesome place on Swan’s Island. The place was full of lobster men. Al managed to get a lot of free lobster because he worked on the docks for a lobster buyer, helping load the boats with bait in the morning, as his second full-time job to help make ends meet. On May 3, 1971, Al and Edie welcomed their firstborn son, Curtis Currier. He was born in Bar Harbor, Maine, but they still lived in Minturn. On September 24, 1974, Jeffery Currier was born, also in Bar Harbor, Maine. They had been in Minturn, Maine, for eight years when a couple from Bellingham, Washington, came out and visited Swan’s Island to visit Edie. She had gone to school with them. They called Albert when they heard Advent Christian (now Fountain Community Church) was looking for a pastor. In June 1978 Al and Edie packed up the boys and headed out to Bellingham for Al to become the pastor at Advent Christian Church. He was pastor of that church from June 1978 to December 1996. In being a pastor he also officiated countless weddings and funerals, of many friends and some strangers. On August 15, 1983, their first daughter Holly Currier was born. In 1986 Al and Edie and the kids took a family trip to Santa Cruz, to a Christian camp there where Albert was the main speaker. Before returning home, they stopped by Great America – a theme park – and Al couldn’t ride any of the rides because they made him sick. It was still a great family trip. Shortly after that Albert began his time at Jones-Moles Funeral Home. He was their on-call officiant for families that didn’t have a church or just didn’t have a preference. He got a name for himself around there and started doing multiple services a day. Somehow with all that he did he managed to be at all the kids’ important moments – spent summers at Lake Whatcom with Holly and many of her friends while they just swam, took Curtis to all his sports games (tee-ball and basketball), and took Jeff to all this choir performances. The boys graduated at Bellingham High School, and as busy as Al was, he was there for both of their graduations. Then in 1997 tragedy struck and his oldest son Curtis suffered a massive stroke and passed away. He was buried on Halloween. Also in 1997, he decided to leave Advent Christian and do a change – temporary chaplain at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He kept doing weddings and funerals, and stamp club. In 1998 he accepted a pastor job at Northwest Community Church in Blaine, Washington. He was the pastor there until 2005. In 2004 Al also took on a custodial role of the funeral homes and worked with his daughter Holly. He also had managed to become president of the Bellingham Stamp Club, which he had joined in 1979 when they moved to Bellingham. He was an active member until 2006. In 2005 he suffered a major heart attack and would never be the same and have to retire from everything. After a long battle with dementia, he left this earth on Halloween 2019 to be with his savior, Jesus Christ. He is survived by his wife Edith Currier, son Jeff Currier, daughter Holly Currier, son-in-law Justin Gehrtz, and grandchildren Alexandria, Lillian, and Bailey Gehrtz. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Fountain Community Church – 2100 Broadway, Bellingham, WA.
