Thomas Alexander Stewart

Born in Huntington Station, New York Thomas Alexander Stewart, Jr. died Good Friday April 18, 2014. He was born on September 8, 1926 in Huntington Station, Long Island, New York. The only son of Thomas, Sr, and Inez (Bertossi) Stewart. Yes, that is where the Italian stories came from. He often said one half of his family knew everything and the other half was too stubborn to admit they were wrong. He graduated from Huntington High School. He lettered in football, baseball, basketball and girls. He graduated high school a year early to enlist in the Navy during WWII. He became an electrician’s mate at Purdue University and joined the submarine service. He served as Admiral McCain’s orderly. That would be the Senator’s father. He could never support John McCain today because he was a “precious little brat” always making demands on the staff. After the war he attended State University of New York, Farmingdale. To play football. When it came time to choose a major the art and veterinarian programs were already full so he chose a new field of Instrumentation. When he graduated he went to work for the Atlantic Refining Company (which later became ARCO) in Philadelphia, PA. He moved to Bellingham, WA in 1970 for the ground breaking of the Cherry Point refinery. He worked there as an Instrumentation Foreman until retirement in 1984. He would often share his opinions with anyone passing through the boilerhouse control room. After retirement he went to work for Hienze Valve Company teaching them the mysteries of 12 to 20 millivolts. While in Philadelphia he met and married Doris Viola (Corkery) Stewart who proceed him in death but he always considered himself still married to her. They had two children, Thomas III and Katherine Inez. In addition to his wife, Pop loved sailing, all sports, a good Manhattan and arguing. He was often know to change side two or three times just to keep an argument going. Also proceeding him in death were his beloved pets, Cindy the basset hound, Snookems, and Jazz the rat terrier who kept him alive and in the family home as long as she could. Farewell Tribute Information Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday April 23 at Bayview Cemetery.At his and the family’s request a celebration of his life will be in the memories of all those who knew him.
