Marjorie J. Kohlieber The early years: Mom and Dad were married in Herington, KS, in 1936. They soon moved with Moms parents to Washington State for employment opportunities. They drove across the country in a Model A truck with sideboards added for all their belongings and so they could ride in the back with three sitting in the front. They were headed for Seattle but their truck broke down in Ephrata and that is where the family settled for several years. Throughout our growing up years, we moved multiple times across North Eastern Washington while Dad found various jobs. Mom and Dad eventually moved to Whatcom County and resided there for the past 42 years. As small children, our mothers guidance was to attend Church and Sunday School to learn about Gods love for us. She raised 5 very individual children. This was not an easy task since she did not have modern conveniences. She had a wood cook stove to cook our meals and a wringer washing machine. The clothes were hung on the clothes line outside or on racks in the bathroom. The cream needed to be separated from the milk and churned into butter. Mom still made time to make our clothes. Us girls always had a new dress on special occasions, Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day or just because. And we never went to bed hungry. We were raised in a carefree home, swimming in the Columbia in the summertime and sleigh riding in the winter. We often had our evening meal on Marcus Island in the summertime. We spent many evenings playing board games or listening to a program on the radio. The boys had a covered wagon and horses, they spent many hunting seasons going into the woods to hunt returning with their deer or bear. These trips with dad contributed to feeding our family. We always had a big garden and the vegetables were canned. Our home was heated by a wood stove, we chopped wood, and stored it in the basement during the summer. Mom and Dad enjoyed competing in a bowling league. They square danced and were one of the best dressed couples, thanks to moms sewing skills. And, if you stopped by their home on any day, you would find them engaged in a hot game of tri-ominoes. As teenagers, our mother showed us the importance of prayer and choosing to follow Gods path. By the time we reached our teenage years, we were given many privileges. Our parents taught us at a very young age to be humble, to know right from wrong, and trusted us to go the right way. Mom did not hold us too tight because she knew that we were Gods children. As each of us grew into adulthood, Mom and Dad gave their blessings to us as we chose our mates and had their grandchildren. As an adult, out mothers legacy was to have raised her children as Christians and that they go into the world spreading Gods love. Mom, job well done. Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants.
