Marina Carol Anne "Gramma" Plaster

Si-ee-naa Gramma was born January 29, 1945 to Barbara Phare and Marvin Williams. She grew up in the old village along the Nooksack River, where she was raised by her grandmother Lillian Phare and her Aunt Ramona “Monie” Morris. Marina married the love of her life “Teddy” Grandpa at the age of 16 and they would spend a short time logging in Queets before moving home to the river and beginning their beautiful family, their first of four children, Syndee. They would make their home at the old village bringing up Syndee, Harold, and Teddy #3 until 1970; when they moved the family to one of the first houses on Kinley Way, (grandpa built it himself). In 1972 gramma and grandpa welcomed their baby into the world, Lisa. While making a home on Kinley Way gramma and grandpa would foster many children, extending their family to others when needed, even welcoming their children’s friends who might have found themselves in a tough spot from time to time; she loved and cared for them all. Later on, Marina and Ted raised their grandchildren: Harold Jr “Jimmi”, Jessica (Jessi), and Alvin who we all know as (ALVIIINN!), because she would always yell for him. The babies around the house would learn ALVIIINN!! as a first word. I think Marina would say, “although she loved her children very dearly, her grandchildren were the light of her life.” She was so happy to be gramma, and was the happiest to have any of them for a visit, from her oldest grandson Matthew “Matty” to her youngest, Heidinn (hay-dinn). Gramma and grandpa were almost never apart and spent a lot of time traveling on the “ndn road,” at places like canoe journeys, cedar weaving conventions, and summer pow wows. You would always find them at their crafting stand with their beautiful cedar work, sharing their gifts with the world. One of gramma’s favorite family get-a-ways was the little red cabins on the ocean shores in La Push. Gramma loved sharing time with her friends and family, and one of her favorite places to be, was in the mountains, harvesting cedar and sharing a picnic lunch, it was always the best day. She loved to teach anyone who would ask about cedar work, especially her children and grandchildren, she was so proud of them. Marina was selected on numerous occasions to be a featured weaver for the annual NNABA convention, (Northwest Native American Basketweavers Association), where she taught and made a lot of friends from around Indian country. Gramma will be remembered for her kind, loving heart. She was a mother to everyone and gramma to most. Marina is survived by her siblings: Felix Solomon, Kim (Mann) Lewis, Karla (Darryl) Edwards, and Darla “Deedee” (Jim) Jones. her children, Harold “Jim” (Sheila) Plaster Sr, Lisa (Verle) Toby, Harold “Jimmi” (Amanda) Plaster JR, Jessica (Virgil) Washington, and Alvin (Alicia) Plaster. Grandchildren: Matthew “Matty” Thompson, Marlisa “Sis” (Corey) Washington, Dillon Jefferson, Keesha Jefferson, Alvis Washington, Trenton Toby, Teddy Plaster, and Davina Plaster. Great grandchildren: Alvis Washington, Baylee Washington, Gunner Washington, Leo Thompson, Makhai Plaster, Vanity Washington, Ares Washington, Heidinn Washington, Halo Wilbur, Felicity Washington, and Makenna Jefferson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ted Plaster JR. Parents: Barbara Phare and Marvin Williams, Siblings: Marvin Williams, and William Solomon. Her children Syndee Thompson and Theodore “Teddy” Plaster III The family would like to thank the North Cascades Health & Rehab staff and friends for taking great care of grandma when we were unable to for the past two years. The family truly appreciates your kindness and friendship that you shared with her. Although we are deeply saddened that she is no longer physically here with us, we take great comfort in knowing her and grandpa are reunited and together again. We love you Gramma
