Loretta V. Hunter

Loretta V. Hunter Loretta Virginia Reilly Hunter was born at home in Ferndale on May 29, 1919 to Thomas and Josephine Reilly, Ferndale pioneers. She died on March 4, 2013 at the age of 93. She met her future husband Bud in high school and they graduated in 1937. After five years of courtship, they married in 1942. Shortly after the wedding, Bud joined the war effort and became a Naval aviator. After the war, Loretta teamed with Bud to build a long and prosperous future for themselves and their family farming south of Ferndale. Loretta loved gardening and spent many hours digging in her flower and vegetable beds. “I never met a weed I didn’t like,” she used to say. Baking was her forte and no one ever turned down a second helping of her pies. Her children have fond memories of the kitchen filled with the aroma of fresh baked bread and cinnamon rolls. Loretta was also active in the community as a 4-H leader, member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a tireless volunteer for St. Mary’s Guild at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In her later years, when son Bob took on a more active role in managing the farm, she and Bud travelled extensively, visiting six continents. Loretta especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren at the Beach House on Lummi Bay where the beautiful sunsets brought her endless hours of joy.Loretta is survived by her sister Patricia Crosby, by her four children, Rick (Carolyn), Susan Cummings, Nancy Halvorson (Dick), Bob (Janet), 9 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. A special thanks is given to Janet Kleman, Whatcom Hospice and all the caregivers whose excellent care of our mother is greatly appreciated. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday March 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5781 Hendrickson Ave., Ferndale, WA.
