Katherine Dalen

Katherine Dalen was born on March 12, 1955, and adopted by Edith and Rodger Dalen. She passed away on August 2, 2026, following a long illness. Katherine valued education and earned her master’s degree before building a long and rewarding career in higher education. She taught English at Washington State University, Whatcom Community College, and Western Washington University. She genuinely enjoyed her students, and they clearly felt the same about her. Over the years, she collected a rather large “gaggle” of former students, many of whom carried a little piece of Katherine with them. Katherine’s children have many fond memories of growing up with her, including road trips throughout the Pacific Northwest and attending athletic events where she could be counted on to cheer—and scream—loudly from the stands. She loved gardening and made sure each of her children had their own patch of grass to care for, whether they wanted one or not. She also loved cooking, and her fried chicken and famous mashed potatoes will be remembered fondly. Katherine enjoyed having her own fruit trees, spending time outdoors, and sharing what she grew with others. Katherine was passionate, supportive, and tenacious. Depending on the situation, these qualities could also be described as stubborn, strong-willed, or extremely enthusiastic. She was, without question, a survivor. Her children lovingly described her as a “force of nature,” a fitting title for the woman who somehow managed to keep the monsters—also known as her children—at bay. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Rodger and Edith Dalen, and her son, Stephen. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews; her “adoptive” neighborhood kids; and the many students she taught throughout her career. Each of them holds memories of Katherine and a piece of her heart. Katherine was deeply loved by her family, her students, her friends, and many others whose lives she touched. She will be remembered for her strength, determination, generosity, sense of humor, and, of course, her ability to make herself heard at an athletic event.
