John Wayne Sparks

John Wayne Sparks was born on December 13, 1945, in Wenatchee, Washington, to Harold and Mabel Sparks, joining his older brothers, Russ and Jim. As a young boy, his family moved to Ferndale, where he grew up on the family farm. During his time at Ferndale High School, John competed in cross country, basketball, and track. After graduating in 1964, he attended Skagit Valley College before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and began what would become a lifelong career as an electrician at Intalco. John's life was centered around family, friendships, and having fun. He was always ready to teach someone a new skill—especially driving. He taught all of his children to drive and even a few of his grandchildren. He took great pride in bowling a perfect 300 game and spent countless enjoyable hours on the golf course. In 2014, John reconnected with several of the men he had served with in Vietnam. It had been decades since they had last seen one another, making the reunion an emotional occasion. They quickly realized how much they still enjoyed each other's company, and what began as a reunion became an annual tradition that they looked forward to for many years. As retirement arrived and the nest emptied, John and his wife, Sheryl, embraced every opportunity to travel throughout the United States and abroad. They especially treasured spending their winters in Scottsdale with their cherished "Arizona friends" and summers in their beloved Birch Bay, strolling down to The Shores to hang with their usual gang! John will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, quick sense of humor, and his not-so-subtle, strong opinions. He loved both watching and playing sports, enjoyed a spirited game of cards, and an evening snack of popcorn in his signature silver bowl while watching the Hallmark Channel. John passed away peacefully in Bellingham, Wa on May 21st surrounded by family. He had the unusual gift of pain free preparation and time; this allowed family to fly in from all over the country to share one last story and a big hug. John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sheryl Sparks; his children, Rhonda LePoidevin (Bruce Kussman) of Snohomish, Washington; Lynn (Kirby) Duncan of Snohomish, Washington; Matt (Alicia) Bailey of Palm Springs, California; Joe Bailey of Blaine, Washington; and Kim O'Brine (DeVon Davis) of Ventura, California. He is also survived by his brother, Jim Sparks of Dayton, Texas. He leaves behind nine grandchildren: Jay Bailey, Julianna (Scott) Kearns, Tyson (Sydney) Zimmer, Garrett LePoidevin, Camron (Kendra) Zimmer, Lauryn LePoidevin, Fiona Duncan, Kaelan Davis, and Kyree Davis; and five great-grandchildren: Olive, Marlee, Alayna, Jameson, and Brynn. John was preceded in death by his son, David Sparks; his granddaughter, Kirianna Davis; his parents, Harold and Mabel Sparks; and his brother, Russ Sparks. Please join us in celebrating John's life, sharing stories, and enjoying more than a few laughs on August 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the BP Heron Center, 7290 Birch Bay Drive.
