Hermeniheldo "Herman" George Almojera

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, Hermeniheldo “Herman” George Almojera. Born to Vincent and Mabel Almojera on April 4th, 1953, Herman was raised with a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and serving others. At just seven years old, his mother, Mabel, taught him how to cook. A skill he proudly carried with him throughout his life. From his father, Vincent, he learned to care for raspberry fields and developed a talent for mechanics and automotive body work. Those early lessons shaped the hardworking, humble, and generous man so many came to know and love. Cooking became one of Herman’s greatest passions. Throughout his life he worked as a cook in a Chinese restaurant in Seattle, later at the Four Seasons Hotel, and eventually fulfilled his dream of owning a restaurant in Blaine. Whether preparing meals for family, friends, or his community, Herman believed food had a way of bringing people together. Herman enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved fishing, crabbing, gardening, working on cars, playing pool, and playing the drums. He found joy in spending time outdoors, sharing stories, lending a helping hand, and making memories with those he loved. Herman was also an inventor and had a few patented ideas. A proud member of the Nooksack Indian Tribe, Herman dedicated much of his life to serving his people and community. He proudly served as Vice Chair of the Nooksack Indian Tribe, helped build homes for tribal families, and was honored to be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Nooksack River Casino. He also played a vital role in developing and writing tribal policies that helped protect and preserve Nooksack culture for future generations. Herman cared deeply about salmon preservation, protecting the Nooksack watershed and worked alongside Billy Frank Jr. in those efforts. One of the accomplishments he often spoke about was meeting with then, Vice President Al Gore to help move forward important conversations about protecting the Nooksack watershed for future generations. His lifelong dedication to his Tribe, its culture, and its natural resources reflected the values he carried every day of his life. One saying Herman shared was: “I loved to watch my mother work. Hard work brings great rewards.” Those words reflected the way he lived with humility, determination, kindness, and an unwavering work ethic. Later in life, Herman found love again when he met his wife, Rita, at Northwood Casino. Together they shared four wonderful years filled with companionship, laughter, and love. Herman is survived by his loving wife, Rita Almojera; his children; his sister, Anna (Fred) Chung; his stepmother, Florenda Almojera; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great- nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Mabel Almojera; his beloved wife, Helen Almojera; his siblings, Andrea “Iya” Almojera, Rose O’Hara, and Orlean Almojera; his uncle, Ivan George; his niece Cathy Corona; great-niece Jenise Wright; and many other beloved family members and friends. In keeping with Herman’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral or memorial service. His family will honor his final wishes by placing his ashes in the places that meant the most to him: alongside Helen, with his parents, at the old family home, and in the waters of the Nooksack and Kingston Rivers. Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Herman’s legacy will live on through the family he loved, the community he faithfully served, the meals he lovingly prepared, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, wisdom, generosity, and quiet strength. His dedication to his family, his Tribe, and the traditions he cherished will never be forgotten
