Gordon F. Fisher

Gordon F. Fisher died peacefully at the age of 91 on March 16, 2013. Gordon was born October 20, 1921 in Wenatchee, WA to Albert & Luella Fisher. He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1940. He attended Wenatchee Junior College for one year, and then the University of Washington. July 1943 Gordon reported for Marine Corp Reserve duty V-12 program at the U of W. He attended Japanese Language School in San Diego and then received infantry training at Camp Pendleton. In December 1944 a troop ship took him to the Solomon Islands. April 1, 1945 he landed on Okinawa. After the Japanese surrendered, Gordon had occupation duty in China and was honorably discharged May 1946. Gordon graduated from the U of W in 1949 with a BA in Art. He accepted a position teaching Art at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. Gordon proposed long distance to Gladys Gustafson of Tacoma, WA. She met him in Chicago where they married December 26, 1949. The family returned to Washington in 1952 with one child and the second on the way. They lived in Seattle while Gordon returned to school with the help of the GI bill. In 1953 Gordon began his 30 year career in teaching Art at Mount Vernon High School. Two more children completed the family. He retired in 1983, and would often run into former students as he and Gladys went about town. As an artist Gordon created beautiful paintings with themes of old barns, driftwood-filled beaches, flowers (especially sweet peas), and old fishing boats. His inspiration was often scenes from Skagit Valley. He created many ceramic pieces, calligraphy items, and abstract paintings. Gordon was a faithful member of Bethany Covenant Church. His Christian faith was an integral part of who he was and how he lived his life. He was a choir member, Bible study leader, Sunday school teacher, and used his artistic talents in many ways for the church. Gordon was a kind and gentle man. He was happiest working on an art project, listening to classical or Christian music and enjoying the sounds of Gladys puttering around the house, making him delicious meals and cookies. He was devoted to his wife of over 62 years. Gladys passed away September 2012 leaving a huge hole in Gordon’s life. He was also preceded in death by his sister Dolores in 1939. He is survived by children Janice Blincoe (Bob), Jim Fisher, Mark Fisher (Lorrie), and Doris Shaeffer (Jim); grandchildren Heidi Blincoe, Emily Williams (Tim), Keith Blincoe, Ben Fisher, Tim Fisher, and Greg Fisher; great-grandchildren Mark and Madeline Williams; sister Julie Lambertson (David); nephew Joel Lambertson (Cathleen); and great-nephew Lucas.
