Beatrice "Bea" Moss

Bea Moss, 91, passed away peacefully in Bellingham, WA. July 2, 2020. Originally from New York, Bea moved to Bellingham in 2003 to live closer to her eldest daughter, Geraldine, and her family. Born March 31, 1929, Bea grew up in Coney Island, New York with her sister Eleanor and her parents, Ethel and Jacob Berger, Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Hungary. A feisty, adventurous and independent young woman, Bea hitchhiked and bicycled through Europe and had a short European modeling career in her early twenties. Bea enjoyed an active social life, always having a date on Saturday night. When she shared the news with her parents that she was engaged, her mom had to ask, “to whom?” Bea married Jack Moss in 1954 and they raised three daughters-Geraldine, Susan and Carolyn. Bea was active in her children’s lives while they grew up in East Northport, Long Island. Always wanting to be where the action was, the family moved to Bayside, Queens to be closer to New York City, but still experience suburban life. When the girls were grown, Bea moved to the lower east side of Manhattan and lived close by to her mother, then a widow. During the early 70s, decades before it became a fad, Bea was into holistic health, magnetic energy, reflexology, slant boards, juicing, distilled water and vitamin supplements. Her favorite musical artists were Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight and The Pips, Barbra Streisand, and Ricky Martin. Always an activist for social justice, Bea marched in support of civil rights and a woman’s right to choose. Her true passion was broadcasting and following her divorce in 1976, she hosted and produced her first show on Manhattan Cable, “Going Solo,” followed by “A Cable to Jewish Life.” A few years later, Bea partnered with Dr. Robert Atkins and produced a series of shows featuring the famed diet doctor. After more than 25 years in the cable broadcasting field in New York City, Bea retired and moved to Bellingham. Living the life of a retiree did not last long for Bea. At the age of 74, she developed, produced and starred in “Grandma’s House,” a half hour TV show that taught children about diversity. Bea played the role of Grandma and shared the message, “We are the Same, We are Different, and We Can All Be Friends.” Bea’s smile, warmth and energy was contagious. Her face would light up when she talked about her children and grandchildren. Bea is survived by her three daughters Geraldine (Christoph) Reitz, Susan (Jim) Meinholz and Carolyn Haynes. Eight grandchildren-Renata Reitz, Tobias Reitz, Leah (Davis) Wright, Jeff Meinholz, Jennifer Meinholz, Jordyn Haynes, Michael Haynes, Alex Haynes and one great-granddaughter Zariah Wright. She is preceded in death by her son, Jonathon and daughter, Ruth, who died in infancy, and her sister Eleanor Zichrona l’vrachah ~ May her memory be for a blessing
