Obituary

Bellingham, Washington

Wayne W. Austin, 87, of Bellingham, WA passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014. Wayne was born in Bellingham, Washington, on March 5, 1927, to the late Lulu and Walter Austin. Wayne graduated from Auburn Seventh-day Adventist Academy in 1945, received his bachelors degree from Walla Walla College (now Walla Walla University) in 1949 and from Loma Linda University in 1958. He met his wife, Ann Roberts, in Hawaii and married in 1979.

Wayne was a beloved member of the community and served his community for 60 years. He was passionate about many things but first and foremost was his love for his Lord and Savior, whom he shared with those he came in contact with. His mission field was the years he practiced as a physician. He enjoyed sharing the love of Jesus with his patients, who he considered his extended family. He was an avid sailor, skier, and bicyclist but had many other interests which included taking pictures to catalog his life experiences, music, airplanes, antiques, traveling to Hawaii, cars and the great outdoors.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Lulu Payne Austin, his brother Lloyd W. Austin and sister Mildred Austin Kehoe. He is survived by wife Ann Roberts Austin, nephew Bill Jordan, niece Roberta Roberts Johnson; three children, Greg Austin, Jill Austin, Jana Austin Jacobson; nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

  1. We really appreciated and valued our friendship with Dr. Austin/Wayne. He was such a kind and caring person and was always interested in what was going on in our lives. Herb always enjoyed their conversations about being in the Air National Guard and Wayne liked it when Herb would tell him about the military training, deployments, and TDYs that he had been on. Our last visit with both him and Ann at their home was very special. We were amazed when we saw the vast collection of military model planes, uniforms, and realia he had. We will truly miss him but look forward to seeing him again in Heaven someday.

  2. Wayne was my Doctor and friend for over 50 years. One of my many memories is a picture of Wayne wearing my flight jacket from when I flew on the EAA B-17G “Aluminium Overcast”. As I look at the photo today I must admit that it looks far better on him than on me. Donna and I miss him very much Farewell my friend

  3. Paul and Jan says:

What a gentleman! Wayne was our Dr. for 44 years, delivering our two daughters. In 1972, Wayne allowed my husband, to be the first father -to-be in the delivery room at St. Joe’s. He set that milestone for Bellingham. Wayne was without a doubt the most compassionate, professional, caring, friendly, funny, loveable, story teller, all wrapped up into the BEST of the best physicians and friend. I was one of the lucky ones to also receive my retirement, farewell flu shot. God’s blessings as you have reached heaven to meet the Lord who meant so much to you. Peace be with Ann and the family in this time of sorrow. We will NEVER forget you.

  4. My deepest sympathy to Anne and the Austin family. Today he is with his Lord and Savior in Paradise and that is a great comfort to know. It has been said … “There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains.” Wayne’s memory and light will forever be present.

  5. One of our fondest memories of Wayne is seeing his car in front of his mothers house on Lakeway Dr. (before Fred Meyer) nearly every day after leaving his office. This loving faithfulness showed in the way he took care of his patients and friends. Jeanette was fortunate to work as one of Dr. Austins office nurses after Polly retired. As many have mentioned in previous tributes, he truly was a family doctor in the best sense of the word. His patients were treated as family. Ann, we will miss Wayne so much! We loved the bicycle rides and the Family Olympics (especially when they were accompanied by the Roberts beautiful Hawaiian music). Jill, Jana and Greg, take comfort in knowing that your father was greatly loved and respected. Its so much fun remembering you in your teen years and the many trips we took to Mt. Baker with the Austin family members (including your dear Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Ev).
