Obituary

Matriarch Virginia L. Norman passed away June 24th, 2022, roughly one month shy of her 94th birthday. A longtime resident of Whatcom County, she originally hailed from North Dakota, moving here with her parents and 8 siblings when she was a child. A compelling woman, who lived life on her own terms, curious about everything and everyone she came across. Among her many accomplishments, she worked at the Whatcom County District Courthouse for many years in the auditor’s office. She took great pride in registering voters, especially women. She mastered the art of various Norwegian and German desserts (much to her family’s delight), crocheted beautiful blankets, and become a late in life computer wizard. She was an ardent supporter of her family, devoting her life to taking care of her daughter, and loving both her children fiercely. She loved staying in touch with everyone she met, whether writing letters to those far away, talking on the phone or having you over for coffee/tea every day. These visits were usually accompanied by some homemade sweets or pickles. She revered travelling with her large extended family, including RV tours of the U.S. with her siblings, and European vacations, always accompanied by any number of saucy romance novels. She endlessly doted on her three grandchildren and great grandchild, who will miss her frankness, humor, pranks, love, and support tremendously. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Stanley Norman, her cherished daughter Jami Lynn Norman, seven of her siblings; Chuck (Susan) King, Russell (Jean) King, Wesley (Bonnie) King, Sharon (Roy) Shipley, Karen (Buck) Haehn, Dot (Jim) MacDonald, Joannie (Ken) Jackson, and her parents Lydia and Joe King. She’s survived by her faithful son and daughter-in-law Barry & Rona Norman, steadfast granddaughters Janae and Janell Norman, chucklesome grandson and granddaughter-in-law Brady Norman and Ruby Rhodes, treasured great-grandson Aksel Norman, beloved sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Jack Haehn, numerous niblings and great-niblings, and all the others she’s touched throughout her 94 years. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Whatcom Hospice Foundation. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 1, at 1:00pm at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale.  To share memories of Virgie, visit the online guestbook at www.molesfarewelltributes.com.

Always a treat to visit with Virgie., whether at Friday night restaurant gatherings or on RV weekends. A lovely light has gone out of the world.

  2. Our Bible Study (which her niece Laurie attends) has been praying for Virgie. Sorry to hear of her passing.

  3. Bonnie and Jack,
Just a note to let you know that I am thinking of you in the loss of your sister and my heart aches for you. I have always really loved when I could see you two at Hong Kong Garden …….or anywhere.
    Sending you love and sympathy,
    Kathy Poortinga
