Obituary

Our beautiful, loving mother passed away peacefully in her sleep on 12/10/2024 with her children close by her side. Parents Fred and Ethel Erickson, brothers Lawrence and Milton and daughter Diane Preceded her in death.

Viola, “Vi” lived her whole life in Ferndale. She was born in her family’s (Fred and Ethel Erickson) home on Thornton Rd. She passed just a few days after leaving her home of over 50 years on Church Rd… Less than a mile from her birth home.

Vi will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who traveled to over 40 countries and 49 of our 50 states with er husband Dick Stone. She worked for over 20 years at the US Bank in Ferndale, retiring in 1986. She graduated from Ferndale High in 1944, attended business school in Bellingham, was active in 3x-pow organizations, P.E.O. and volunteered for the Salvation Army. Vi was a volunteer poll worker and active in the Ferndale Heritage Society. She even attended many Ferndale High School reunions with Dick… “Mr. Stone.”

Family and friends were important to her. She remembered everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries by sending a card to each or making a personal call. Christmas was especially important to her. She gave Christmas socks/bags to everyone in the family with all items individually wrapped… over 200 gifts total.

She loved to sew and made and gave away many of her round rag rugs.

Her death was a shock. She was healthy, vibrant, happy, and involved to the end. Her kitchen table was covered with Christmas cards addressed and stamped that she was preparing to send. We all expected there would be more years to enjoy her smile and love. She will be missed so very much.

Vi is survived by her son Mike Dunkin and his wife Glenda, daughter Susan Oiness and her husband Rick, stepson Chuck Stone and wife Elizabeth, son in law Ron Nymeyer, her loving cats Muffy and Duffy and grandchildren Derrik, Adina, Jennifer, Kelli, Darryl Jesse, Morgan, Alexandra and great grandchildren Mikhayla, Ladainian, Kalea, Emerson, Felix, Jameson, Kyle, Ryan, Austin, and Teddy.

There will be a Celebration of Viola’s Life on February 15th at 1:00pm at the United Church, located at 2034 Washington St. in Ferndale, WA.

Suggested Memorials in Vi’s Name may be made to the organizations in the “Charities/Donations” Tab.

  1. Mike & Susie,
Your mom leaves such a strong pattern for all of us. She loved my parents and was a beacon of light on “Swede Hill”. Be comforted by the Lord.

  2. I’m so sorry about her passing. I have one of her hand crafted rag rugs which I have on my table and receive compliments on it often. Thinking of her family and friends, wishing them peace and comfort.
