Obituary
We are saddened by the loss of our son and brother, Steve. Steven Loren DeWitt passed away surrounded by family at Peacehealth St. Joseph Medical Center a year ago on August 7, 2001, after a courageous and selfless battle with early onset Alzheimer’s.
Steve was born on February 18, 1960, to Loren and Lenore DeWitt in Bellingham, Washington. He was preceded in death by his father Loren and brother Jonny. He is survived by his mother Lenore, sisters Pam Hatch (Greg) and Shelly Trott (Ryan), Aunt Sue Franey, who always had a special place in his heart, numerous nieces, daughter Sarah Akin (Kevin), granddaughters Madeline and Natalie, wife Patricia and stepsons Karl and Eric, and many close friends in California.
After some time at Western Washington University, Steve relocated to Half Moon Bay, California where he began a career in construction. His passion for high-end carpentry led to his work being published in Architectural Digest magazine. Steve’s pride and joy was his home and his daughter, Sarah and granddaughters Madeline and Natalie.
In 2018 Steve returned to Bellingham to be close to his mother, sisters and his favorite spot on Lake Whatcom, the family beach.
Although the journey with Alzheimer’s was ever so painful for Steve and his family to witness, his witty sense of humor was with him until the very end of the journey. His case study is already helping many scientists at the University of Washington further brain research.
There will be a private celebration of Steve’s life at a later date and his final resting place will be with his father, Loren, at Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham, WA.
