Obituary

Steven Grant Staves died on Sunday August 26, 2012 at age 60 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Steve was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and met his wife Diane at Rutgers University when he was just 19. He had a long successful career in management, working at Vicks, Proctor and Gamble, Kodak and finally as President of the Duracell Battery Company. Since retiring, he has regularly guest lectured a various universities, traveled extensively and fulfilled his ambition to compete in the World Series of Poker. He was a devoted husband and the best of fathers. He was a kind and gentle man who showed us his love in a million little ways each and every day.
He is survived by Diane Staves, his well -loved wife of 37 years, his wonderful son Matthew, his cherished daughters Jenny and Kelly and his new son-in-law Rishi. He leaves behind his dear mother Marion and his younger brother Dale, along with his much loved brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by many.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday August 30th at Moles Farewell Tributes in Bellingham, with visitation beginning at 1pm and a Celebration of Life at 2pm. For those who wish to send flowers, we ask instead that a donation be made in his name to The International Myeloma Foundation (myeloma.org). 1. I went to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and sang in the choir with Steve. We probably had more fun that we were supposed to have! Didn’t he have a brother Wally, too? Please accept my sympathy.

  3. Eric Hirst says:

I first met Steve several years ago, during our work on the City of Bellingham Budget Advisory Committee. Although Steve was a conservative and I am a liberal, we respected and liked each other. Steve and I continued to meet occasionally after our committee work ended. I really enjoyed our conversations because he listened so well to alternative points of view and responded to my ideas so thoughtfully and intelligently.
    I will definitely miss Steve.

    Eric
