Obituary

Sidney DeVries passed away on July 14th 2015 in Bellingham, WA at 78 years young.

Sid’s final days were spent surrounded by family, friends and his caregivers, or angels as he lovingly called them. Sid was born May 13th 1937 in Leeuward Netherlands to Sylvia and Douwe DeVries and immigrated with his family to the US when he was a teenager, eventually settling in Washington. Sid enjoyed a career in telecommunications, so much so that he even retired three times. In his retirement Sid was very active in his community on Lummi Island.

Sid loved the outdoors as a boy and never lost that love as he enjoyed many years of camping with his family and taking photos as an amateur photographer. He spent time tinkering on many different projects, and there was never a challenge too big for him to accomplish once he set his mind to it. Happy and full of life, his true love was spending time with his children and grandchildren, whether it was traveling or at home.

Sid is survived by his companion of many years Carolyn Clough, sister Sally Reehoorn, sister-in-law Murella DeVries and brother Mike DeVries, his children Bryan (Cathy) DeVries, Bill (Cassandra) DeVries, Lorraine DeVries, Kim (Guy) Hanson, John (Shawn) Devine, as well as grandchildren Ryan and Kindra DeVries, Mackenzie and Paige Devine, and Annika and Tate Hanson. While he will be greatly missed, he will be happy to join his dearly departed brother Simon DeVries and his beloved wife Barbara DeVries on his next adventure. He will be remembered for the unconditional love and support he continually expressed to his family and friends.

  1. Sorry to hear of Sid’s passing, Lots of memories from the days when we lived on St. Paul and you were on E.Maryland. Bob & Jean Vogel

  2. Sid will be missed tremendously. I have very fond memories of a happy man bowling alongside his bride-Barb. After Barb died he became part of our bowling team “The Unwanted” and I loved every Thursday spending time with him. I’m so sorry for your loss. Just know, that everyone who met and knew Sid loved him. Our prayers are with you.

  3. I have so many fond memories of Uncle Sid. As a child he always did special things with myself and brothers. When I-5 was being built he took us in his car and we drove on the road that one was allowed to yet. He would drive us to the top of Little Mountain in Mt.Vernon and one time when the daisies were blooming we stopped to pick some one his suggestion b/c that would be a nice thing to do for our Mom(his sister).
In Lynden we would go to the stream in the back of Gpa and Gma’s and catch salmon with a pitch fork. Also he would make me believe that I was driving while sitting on his lap and we would drive down the “Double Ditch Road.”
I remember staying at your house in Bellingham some summers and also snow skiing at Baker together.
Always appreciated that he made an effort to see me whenever I was in town visiting Mom. Also as much as daily living became more challenging he was always positive.
I will dearly miss not being able to connect when I come to visit Mom again in Sept.
Love, Hugs, and Prayers for your comfort dear Cousins,
    Sylvia Reehoorn VanRegenmorter

  4. Judy Stanley says:

Sid was most cherished to me at WWU. I loved working with him and just spending time chatting away. Just so so honored he was part of my life. God’s love and comfort to you all.

  5. We loved Sid. He wasn’t on the Island long enough. We missed seeing him when he moved off Island–Barb too when she passed. He was a good friend–helping Mel when he needed help. He was funny and we enjoyed visiting with him. He had a great laugh. We found Sid to be a very caring man.
Say “Hi” to Barb for us!
