Obituary

A kind heart, bright smile, and selfless nature blended with a quiet confidence that made everyone around her feel comfortable and happy. You will be missed.

Born October 7th, 1940 Shirley spent her youth being raised by her mom Maxine, and Dutch Meenk along with her three sisters Mary Sue, Nancy, and Joanne. Many childhood memories were founded between spending time with her Aunts Mable and Hazel and days on the Lakeway golf course that their grandfather Paul Kuehnoel built.

Shirley and Ted were high school sweethearts from the 9th grade. Shirley found time to further her education in cosmetology and worked in Lynden until Ted completed his tour of duty with the US Navy.

Shortly after that they were married and sons Bruce and Bryan followed. Shirley was not only a loving and present mother but also a talented seamstress, gifted artist, and wonderful homemaker. This was felt not only by her children but also her grandchildren and all who knew her.

Shirley and Ted spent many years traveling—fishing, canoeing, adventuring with friends and meeting new ones along the way. They enjoyed time together in Alaska, B.C., Queen Charlotte Island, Africa, and New Zealand making many wonderful memories.

Shirley was a gracious, loving woman and a fierce fighter. She battled ovarian cancer for over eight years before deciding she’d had enough. She spent her remaining days at home in the company of her husband, sons, and closest family.

Shirley is survived by her husband Ted, children Bruce (Kelly) and Bryan (Debbie), grandchildren Jenna (PJ), Brennan, and Benton (Nell), and sisters Mary Sue (Ernie), Nancy (Bob), and Joanne.

Her husband Ted and the rest of the family would like to cordially invite you to a celebration of her life on Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Moles Farewell Tributes – 2465 Lakeway Dr. Bellingham.

There will be a short service followed by a reception. Everyone is encouraged to dress casually and bring a big smile because the only tears allowed will be tears of joy.

Since food is always a part of every celebration we would love it if you would consider preparing your favorite potluck style dish to be shared with the group.

We look forward to seeing you all.

  1. Dear Ted,
Shirley sure had the kindest of heart. I always remember how she would answer me whenever I needed help esp. with my tractor. “Don’t worry, Lillian. I will send Ted there.”. or “Ted will be there in a few minutes.” What am I going to do now without her telling you, huh? I will surely miss her and her sweet smile.

Gone from sight but always in our hearts, never to be forgotten.

    Dear Ted and family,
We are so sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. Sending our deepest condolences to all. We know how much Gene and Elaine enjoyed all their time with you and Shirley! We always enjoyed hearing about all of your adventures. We wish we would have kept in better touch the past 10 years but you have been in our thoughts.

We wish we could be with you to celebrate Shirley’s life but Mark had rotator cuff surgery last Friday and his post-surgery appointment is at the same time. Just know that you are in our hearts!

My heart goes out to the family. I’m sorry I won’t be able to attend the memorial, as I will be going to a docor’s appointment with Tammie in Seattle. My thoughts will be with you.
