Obituary

A kind heart, bright smile, and selfless nature blended with a quiet confidence that made everyone around her feel comfortable and happy. You will be missed.

Born October 7th, 1940 Shirley spent her youth being raised by her mom Maxine, and Dutch Meenk along with her three sisters Mary Sue, Nancy, and Joanne. Many childhood memories were founded between spending time with her Aunts Mable and Hazel and days on the Lakeway golf course that their grandfather Paul Kuehnoel built.

Shirley and Ted were high school sweethearts from the 9th grade. Shirley found time to further her education in cosmetology and worked in Lynden until Ted completed his tour of duty with the US Navy.

Shortly after that they were married and sons Bruce and Bryan followed. Shirley was not only a loving and present mother but also a talented seamstress, gifted artist, and wonderful homemaker. This was felt not only by her children but also her grandchildren and all who knew her.

Shirley and Ted spent many years traveling—fishing, canoeing, adventuring with friends and meeting new ones along the way. They enjoyed time together in Alaska, B.C., Queen Charlotte Island, Africa, and New Zealand making many wonderful memories.

Shirley was a gracious, loving woman and a fierce fighter. She battled ovarian cancer for over eight years before deciding she’d had enough. She spent her remaining days at home in the company of her husband, sons, and closest family.

Shirley is survived by her husband Ted, children Bruce (Kelly) and Bryan (Debbie), grandchildren Jenna (PJ), Brennan, and Benton (Nell), and sisters Mary Sue (Ernie), Nancy (Bob), and Joanne.

Her husband Ted and the rest of the family would like to cordially invite you to a celebration of her life on Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Moles Farewell Tributes – 2465 Lakeway Dr. Bellingham.

There will be a short service followed by a reception. Everyone is encouraged to dress casually and bring a big smile because the only tears allowed will be tears of joy.

Since food is always a part of every celebration we would love it if you would consider preparing your favorite potluck style dish to be shared with the group.

We look forward to seeing you all.

Sorry for your loss. Yes, there will be tears for some time to come. Shirley was fortunate and deserving to have an attentive and devoted husband. Many years ago, Ted and my husband used to fish at the same fishing hole. About mid-day, Ted would say he was going home to spend the rest of the day with Shirley. As usual my husband showed up well after dark. I have repeated that story many times throughout the years.
    Sincerely, Karna

  2. Dear Ted and family,Memory of Shirley’s warm smile and cheerful voice shines in our minds. Like you stated she “continued to warm the room with the radiance that so freely flowed from her.” Her radiance will be missed.
