Obituary

January 19, 2013

Born in Bellingham, Roy was the youngest child of his Swedish immigrant parents Agnes & Oscar Ericsson. He is survived by his wife, of 59 years, Carol; their children, Eric (Sheilah) & Lori Dorough (Scott); grandchildren Anna & Garrett Dorough; and numerous nieces & nephews & extended family who were all precious to him. Roys brother Eric & sister Betty Jewett preceded him in death.
Roy grew up in the York neighborhood, graduating from Bellingham HS in 1943. At age 18 Roy enlisted in the Navy, fulfilling his desire to serve his country. His ship, USS LSM-144, delivered troops, & supplies to battle sites throughout the Pacific. This experience molded his character forever; he was truly a member of Americas greatest generation. Upon discharge from the Navy, Roy came home to Bellingham, and graduated from Western Washington College of Education in 1950. In his early career Roy taught in the Marysville & Mt.Baker School Districts, but most of his 32 years as a teacher and counselor were spent in Bellingham schools (Sunnyland, Shuksan & Sehome HS).
In retirement, Roy & Carol traveled and explored our country. Upon returning, he declared that Lake Samish was the best of it all and here he remained, to share the joy of his lake with family and friends. He enjoyed the mountains, waters and islands of the Pacific Northwest. Most of all, he loved and cared for his family and othershe truly had a Heart of Gold.
The family expresses special gratitude to our hospice family of Nancy, Michelle, Hannah, & Lisa for their loving care of Roy & family. Heartfelt thanks also to the incredible staff at Hospice House for their care & support.

  1. Dear Carol and Family,
Roy was my 6th grade teacher at Sunnyland Elementary School. He was instrumental in helping me to come out of my shell and not be so shy. He was definitely one of my favorite teachers, and also one of the favorites of my brother, Dan.

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. Roy will be greatly missed.

  2. My memory of your husband, father, grandfather, was at Shuksan Junior High. He was my science teacher and my friends and I could hardly wait to get to his class room. There was always a fascinating science experiment of one sort or another that he would be setting up as we came into the room. He made learning fun, and we knew he really cared for us. I pray kids today get that same kind of care and love he so generously gave. Please know you are being lifted in prayer as you mourn your loss.

  3. Dear Ericsson Family: I had Mr. Ericsson for a sixth grade teacher at Sunnyland. He was a favorite of mine. All the kids loved him, we had fun and learned so much! I have fond memories of that time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  4. I have wonderful memories of all of you from our visits to the Wilson cabin at Lake Samish. Roy was always fun and made every kid feel special. My sympathy and caring thoughts. Judy Piovesan Harvey
