  2. IN MEMORY OF:
    SENIOR MASTER SARGENT ROY PHLUGER

I wish to honor SMSgt Roy Phluger whom I held in the highest regard and respect. He served his country honorably, was a patriot, and touched many people in a very positive way, mime included. It was a privilege to serve at his side.

I remember very well the place and time I had the good fortune to meet Roy for the first time. It was SMSgt Phluger’s invitation to visit his unit, the 262 Communications Squadron which was located at the time at the Bellingham Airport. Thus, I began the continuation of my own personal military odyssey and a professional association with Roy which began in 1972.

Those that served together in the 262nd will recall that our commanding officer, Lt Col Sam Wilson, coined the name “Frugal Phluger.” The reason for this title can be discussed in privileged communication only; but it simple fit the character of this old supply sergeant. I can personally attest that this was a fitting monniker and one that would put a smile on the face of any American tax payer.

As a young Air Force officer, I visited the unit’s supply NCO at his office. I needed to requisition material for my newly assigned work station, an old gray desk about the size of a VW Bug. I had several needed items in mind and was taken by surprise when “Frugal Phluger” handed me a two inch, used #2 lead pencil and three sheets of typing paper. As my mouth flopped open in protest, I was dismissed by the supply sergeant who quickly informing me that the pencil had a perfectly good eraser, a sharp point, and three sheets of paper was all I needed.

Senior Master Sargent Roy Phluger was a member of a cadre of dedicated professional military technicians at the 262nd that left their mark on the United States Air Force communications community through their dedication and hard work. As a very tight team, they left their mark on our business and touched many lives in a very positive the way, mine included.

I will forever remember and wish to thank Roy-Roy, Uncle Roy, Frugal Phluger, but especially Senior Master Sergeant Roy Phluger.

    With fond memories,

    (Bill)

Hello Roy,So as a young boy when I would come down the play with Levin you would scare the hell out me, to me you seem to be suck a strict dad, everything was in its place and everything had a place. As a teenager I got to know you better I can remember a trip to your cabin wear you taught me how to respected and fire a shot gun and what it was to lead before you pulled the trigger, as a young man I found your sense of humor and your love for a good stiff drink. Over the years I found myself thinking of you and Shirley as my second mom and Dad, Roy It felt good to know you trusted me enough to work on your truck and I won’t hold it against you that it was a Ford, Roy thanks for being a part of my life
