Obituary

Robert Louis (Deguzman) Castro passed away Friday, April 14, 2023 surrounded by his family. Robert was born the 7th of 12 children to Jessica and Felipe DeGuzman on October 6, 1938 in Brookyln, New York. Robert joined the military and proudly served his country for 26 years in the U.S. Army, achieving rank of Staff Sargent. Robert is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He met his beloved wife Akiko while stationed in Japan and married February 28, 1962. They welcomed four children into the world, Mikki, Daniele, David and Tony. Robert attended Sonoma State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography in 1978.

Shortly after graduating, he accepted a position with U.S. Customs in Oroville, Washington. He served in this position for almost 23 years when he retired as a Supervisor. Robert learned the art of Aikido and trained in Japan. He competed throughout his life and his passion found him teaching Aikido at the University of Nevada Las Vegas after retirement.

Robert traveled throughout his military career, and when he would return home, he would teach his children about the cultures through food. Robert enjoyed taking his children to explore different restaurants to experience new foods.

Robert is survived by one older sister, two younger sisters, one younger brother, and 19 nieces and nephews.  He is survived by his children Mikki (Don), Daniele (Steve), David and Tony (Eva), and his three grandchildren Chad (Kira), Jordon and Jessica. He is survived by one great-grand child Logan and another on the way.

Robert was never one to say goodbye because of its permanence, so this is just a see you later.

“I will see you on the other side.”
