Obituary

Ray “Crowbar” James, 68, Lummi Nation, passed away on January 8th, 2023 at his home. Crowbar was born on March 7, 1954 to Warren and Stella Jefferson James Sr. at Lummi Nation where he was a lifetime resident.

Crowbar was a fisherman, and a caretaker for his baby sister. Ray was married to Nancy Barnes and worked on the Alaskan pipeline. He also worked for the sea ponds, skookum and as a poker dealer at the first Lummi Casino.

Crowbar was best known for his barking at everyone, caring for his nieces and nephews and also teaching them to bark. His favorite activities were going to the casino, bingo, cruising the horn, playing horseshoes with his family, and walking the beaches to look for eagle feathers. He will always be remembered for his laughter and constant barking at people.

He is survived by his siblings: Warren (April) James Lummi, Diane Paul Swinomish, Reynold Hutch (Anita) James Sr. Lummi, David (Colleen) James Lummi, Bruce (Barbara) James Swinomish, Mary Morganroth Lummi, Joe (Kelly) Franzen Ferndale and his god mother Pat Alvarez, Carson, California. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father Warren James Sr, his mother Stella Jefferson-Phair, brother Jim Jim Roger James and sister in-law Donna Mae Cultee.

A prayer service will be held Wednesday January 11, 2023 at 6:00 pm with Angela Jefferson at the Wexliem Community Building with a funeral mass following Thursday January 12, 2023 at 10:00 am also at Wexliem with Father Pat Twohy officiating.
