Obituary

Peggy Sue Austin Stone passed away peacefully in Anacortes, WA, on November 1, 2024. Peggy was born on November 17, 1932, in Monticello, Alabama, to Bernie and Evelyn Austin.

Peggy graduated from Troy State Teachers College and spent her career as a teacher in the Bellingham School District. She married Kenneth Stone on July 17, 1954, and together they had three children: Debbie, Jennifer, and Ken Jr. Kenneth passed away on January 15, 2011.

Peggy loved the “three C’s”: cooking, camping, and cards. She had a special and unique sense of humor, a warm personality, and that good ol’ southern hospitality. But what Peggy truly valued was time spent with her family. She cherished one on one times with her family and friends.

Peggy is survived by her children, Debbie Fisher, Jennifer “Jo” Huge (Bruce), and Kenneth Stone Jr. (Phyllis); her brothers, Butch Austin and Danny Austin; and her eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; her parents, Bernie and Evelyn “Beebe” Austin; and her brothers, Bob Austin, Frank Austin, and Max Austin.

I thank God for Peggy Sue Austin Stone and her beautiful life. Home grown from the deep South in Alabama. She loved her family there and her family with Ken in the Pacific Northwest. “Mom” was always practicing hospitality in their home with meals, games, and wonderful conversations. She left behind a legacy of story telling and poems. One poem that she wrote says it well.

There is a hole in my heart that my family members leave when they have visited and must go home.

Even though I am somewhat resigned to days without Ken, my long-time partner of 56 years, now deceased. He often seems near.
But my children I can still touch and interact with. I get used to their presence just in a few days and life seems almost normal again.

But alas, on their departure angst sets in.
Still for their sake and mine I try to put up a good front.
Not let them see the tear that gathers in the corner of my eye.

In a few hours life is back to normal.
There are friends to call and talk with, share like concerns, or meet for lunch.
Chores and business to take care of, poetry to write.
And once again memories to hold close.
The telephone calls will come and I will be most content.
