Obituary

Nellie Burrous, age 92 of Bellingham passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023 at Whatcom Hospice House.  She was born in Anacortes, WA on July 22, 1930 to John and Hannah Stevens. The family moved to Bellingham in 1941 and she attended Columbia Elementary, Whatcom Jr. High and Bellingham High School.

She was married to Robert (Bob) Burrous on June 14, 1947 and they celebrated 66 years together until his passing in 2013. She has missed him everyday since then.  She is survived by two daughters, Connie (Dave) Crocker and Sharon (Dennis) Salhus, three grandsons, Marcus Crocker (Lisa), Kipp Salhus (Melissa) and Tye Salhus and five great grandchildren, Payton, Campbell and Sawyer Crocker, and Cody and Casey Salhus. Nellie was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Nellie was a beautiful seamstress and made clothes for herself and her daughters and many home decoration projects.  She took pride in keeping a beautiful home until she moved to assisted living in March of this year. She worked outside of the home most of her adult life, notably as a private nurse for several years and then retiring from the office of Wilder Construction in 1988.

She and Bob enjoyed entertaining their friends, traveling by motorhome and ocean cruising, wintering in Arizona for many years and most of all, dancing!  They belonged to two dance clubs and several organizations including, the Bellingham Yacht Club, the Elks, the American Legion and the V.F.W. For many years Nellie was involved with the local chapter of supporters of the Seattle Children’s Hospital.

We are honoring her request for no public services. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to Whatcom Hospice House, 2800 Douglas Ave., Bellingham, WA  98225.
